Overview

Superintendent Sonographer, Gynaecology – University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust. The closing date is 01 October 2025.

A new and exciting opportunity has arisen for a Superintendent Sonographer in Gynaecology. The post holder will be regarded as a senior specialist sonographer in Gynaecology and a key member of the Consultant-led team. They will have extended skills to scan and report autonomously in Gynaecology, with specialised knowledge to support service delivery and play a pivotal role in the development and expansion of the service.

The postholder will be a Gynaecology clinical specialist with specialised training in the modality, able to operate independently within a defined scope of practice, and to perform and issue reports in Gynaecology. They will work as part of the multidisciplinary team and liaise with associated services. They will have experience in cross-sectional image interpretation and apply this to clinical prioritisation and decision making, working towards expertise in the four pillars of advanced practice.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will perform and issue ultrasound reports, providing advanced clinical skills, opinion and diagnosis for patient centred care. They will exercise a high degree of professional autonomy in decision-making and liaise with consultant colleagues and Radiographers to improve patient outcomes.

The postholder will have key working relationships within the department and wider organisation to define scopes of practice and develop clinical practice within their field. They will lead and support the operational management team as well as clinical leaders in the development of Gynaecological ultrasound services in line with best practice and national standards.

Job responsibilities
  • Maintain a high-quality standard of patient care and provide an excellent experience for patients.
  • Independently undertake ultrasound examinations using specialist knowledge in line with local, regional and national guidance.
  • Be responsible for development of the specialist service, ensuring optimum use of resources and facilities.
  • Provide professional leadership and development of the wider team.
  • Develop and improve professional expertise via continuous professional development.
  • Ensure a safe working environment and compliance with CQC standards and specialist reporting guidance.
  • Participate in vetting and prioritisation of ultrasound examinations according to departmental and national guidelines; optimise ultrasound lists.
  • Provide service across multiple locations as required by service needs.
  • Define daily work programme/scheduling of imaging and supervise training for trainees, junior staff and assistants.
  • Lead service expansion and manage space, equipment and staffing requirements.
  • Communicate complex information to patients professionally, obtaining informed consent where necessary.
  • Mentor and support junior sonographers; supervise and teach radiological registrars and organise educational experiences for medical and health professional students.
  • Participate in clinical audit and foster a culture of audit within the specialty.
  • Lead development and innovation in new clinical practices and technology.
  • Manage workflows with data input for patient records and governance, data protection and information governance compliance.
  • Engage in department governance including risk management and health and safety.
  • Ensure equipment is cleaned, maintained and available; oversee maintenance of key equipment relevant to the role.
  • Provide training and education for sonographers, nurse sonographers to degree level and junior doctors in ultrasound, including early pregnancy, in line with RCOG competencies.
  • Act as a role model to staff, promote wider engagement with stakeholders and coordinate CPD activities.
  • Provide line management to sonographers in training in the department.
  • Work across sites, including the Hospital of St Cross in Rugby, City of Coventry Health Centre and Community Diagnostics Hub developments.
  • Ensure consistent quality and standardisation of service in line with RCOG and RCR requirements.
