Overview

Overall purpose: To oversee management of studies as part of the in vivo team in the Mary Lyon Centre (MLC) at MRC Harwell. This post is responsible for executing studies planned by in‑vivo project managers for external academic researchers or biotech companies, primarily involving mouse models of human diseases such as cancers, mitochondrial disease, kidney disease and other areas.

Responsibilities
  • Line management of two technicians, including pastoral care, career development, managing performance, and workload distribution.
  • Day‑to‑day responsibility for running allocated studies: scheduling mouse cohorts, arranging technicians, calculating doses, diluting drugs, organising training, ensuring full plans and relevant paperwork such as risk assessments and SOPs are signed off.
  • Develop SOPs, ensure they are read and adhered to, and troubleshoot problems that arise in studies.
  • Generate study records, ensure they are up to date and accurate, and carry out basic data plotting such as mouse body weights vs treatment.
  • Work flexibly to manage changing priorities, ensuring all studies are compliant with Home Office regulations, that technicians are licensed, trained and competent.
  • Liaise with internal and external users and respond to enquiries about studies under supervision.
  • Undergo training to achieve a Home Office Licence to work on mice and carry out training of technicians in good laboratory skills, making up solutions and calculating doses.
Qualifications
  • Master's degree or bachelor's degree with extensive biological experience in an academic or commercial research setting.
  • Extensive research experience, including working in a laboratory environment and study or project management.
  • Experience with laboratory animals, and experience of working under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft packages and ability to accurately follow protocols/SOPs, calculate concentrations and doses, and maintain accurate record keeping for multiple studies.
  • Experience with laboratory information management systems, writing SOPs and quality control processes is desirable.
Personal Skills/Qualities
  • Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, flexible and adaptable approach, service‑delivery focus, ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience in training others is desirable.
