Overview

Purpose of the job: To support students (in groups or one-to-one) to gain vocational skills in carpentry, meeting the individual learning needs of the students.

Role: Support the operational team in the delivery of sessions. Lead sessions where appropriate ensuring correct staff ratios for all groups during the day.

About Oarsome Chance

Oarsome Chance works in the Gosport and Portsmouth area of Hampshire. We are searching for a skilled professional with a carpentry background. The ideal person will be passionate, resilient, and able to work in an inclusive manner to meet the needs of the pupils. The charity will consider candidates with a range of trade backgrounds (e.g., carpentry, construction, mechanics) and/or an experienced D&T teacher who can bring enthusiasm and creative, hands-on ideas to sessions. Sessions will include delivery of accredited outcomes in line with qualification assessment criteria.

The successful candidate will pass on skills that can be used in a future career and will help pupils get excited about learning a practical trade in line with the ethos of Oarsome Chance. The board of Trustees is passionate about the project and providing the best learning for students. We are focused on personalising learning so students are interested in a range of areas.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and deliver carpentry-related sessions, ensuring correct staff ratios for all groups.
  • Support the operational team in session delivery and pupil engagement.
  • Build strong relationships with pupils and work in a therapeutic and inclusive manner.
  • Maintain, service and repair workshop machinery, tools and equipment; keep the workshop safe, orderly and presentable.
  • Operate within OC policies and procedures, risk assessments, and safeguarding requirements.
  • Participate in team meetings, training, supervision and performance development.
  • Take on any other responsibilities appropriate to the post and salary.
  • Encourage safe and constructive engagement and promote a student-centred approach.
Qualifications and Education Requirements

These are not essential to apply and will be offered by OC.

  • Annual safeguarding for school staff KCSIE 2024
  • Conflict de-escalation in a school setting
  • Safeguarding and protecting children L3
  • First aid training
  • Willing to undertake further training and updates
