Staff Nurse - Day Ward

With a high volume and fast turnover of patients undergoing cardiac and thoracic day case investigations and procedures, a role on the Nurse led day ward could be the challenge you are looking for. We are open Monday to Friday, 06:45-20:00.

The nursing team:

  • Prepare patients for their procedures
  • Perform venepuncture and 12 lead ECGs
  • Facilitate an enhanced recovery and nurse led discharge
  • Manage discharge lounge to facilitate safe discharge across the hospital

This is a time pressured environment, where you must be a team player, well organised, and able to deal with ever changing priorities. All our staff are expected to be able to effectively multitask and ensure all infection control risks are managed effectively. Patient's experience is optimised on the ward through good communication and team working.

Main duties of the job

The elective Day ward strive to admit ambulatory patients, prepare procedure, recover, and discharge as a day case. Basic skills required are:

  • Recognise and respond to a deteriorating patient
  • Cannulation
  • Venepuncture
  • Perform 12 lead ECG's
  • TR band management

Qualifications
  • Professional adult nursing qualification and clinical knowledge acquired through training to degree level OR diploma level qualification or above
  • Registered with Nursing and Midwifery Council
Experience
  • To be able to a range of judgement and assessment skills in planning, delivering and evaluating complex patient care plans whilst communicating with patients, families and the multi-disciplinary team.
  • To be able to support complex patients with their potentially unpredictable care/treatment needs with occasional post procedure complications.
  • To be able to prioritise care based upon patient/service need in a busy clinical environment.
  • To be able to manage own patient workload in terms of prioritisation of needs escalating as necessary.
  • To be able to undertake complex nursing interventions for example: administering medications, catheter insertion, complex wound management.
  • To be able to undertake frequent moving and handling tasks relating to patient care utilising mechanical aids with some tasks requiring moderate effort.
  • The post holder will have frequent exposure to emotional / distressing incidents and frequent exposure to bodily fluids (including as a result of surgical / medical intervention and in the delivery of activities of daily living).
  • To be able to effectively communicate complex, confidential, and/or sensitive condition related information through a range of interpersonal skills to patients, colleagues, and families (such as providing educational support, complex discharge planning).
  • To understand the process of escalation within the Trust ensuring this is done promptly to ensure patient and staff safety and recognising and raising any safeguarding concerns.
  • To be led by Trust policies and procedures and knowing when to appropriately escalat and to act independently within the NMC Code of Conduct.
  • To be responsible for the day-to-day supervision of staff within their teams including delegating patient care activities and to co-ordinate ward/department when appropriate with managed support from senior colleagues.
  • To act in a professional manner and as a role model to other staff members and students, providing clinical supervision of junior staff as well as patients and their families.
  • To actively participate in departmental education programmes
  • To participate in policies and procedures to improve outcomes and the quality of service provided and actively participate in the implementation of any changes in practice within the clinical area.
  • To act as a link nurse (within an allocated area of expertise) and / or undertake audits as required and may occasionally participate in research and development.
  • To maintain accurate electronic and/or manual clinical, patient and other records, as appropriate, ensuring that all documentation adheres to the Trust's standards.
