An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and motivated Senior Staff Nurse / Advanced Theatre Practitioner to join our dedicated team at the Day Surgery Unit, West Berkshire Community Hospital. We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic, committed to excellence and eager to support the Ward manager and wider multidisciplinary team in delivering outstanding patient care. This role will involve taking the lead in all the areas of the department with a focus on the ward area. Our day surgery unit is a modern, well‑equipped department providing a wide range of surgical and diagnostic procedures. As a unit we play an important role in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. The Unit operates Monday to Friday 08.00 - 18.00. We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join our busy, professional team of day surgery nurses, who deliver comprehensive pre and post‑operative care to day case patients undergoing procedures under both general and local anaesthesia as well as endoscopy procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Take charge of a shift and ensure the safe, effective delivery of high‑quality, evidence based care.
  • Communicate effectively with all members of the multi‑disciplinary team, including nurses, anaesthetists, healthcare assistants and other allied health professionals.
  • Support and supervise staff, contributing to their professional growth under the guidance of ward sister/charge nurse.
  • Provide patient‑focused programmes of care that address the complex and changing health needs of our client group.
  • Ensure the smooth running of the unit in the absence of the ward sister/charge nurse, offering both clinical and managerial leadership.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement and actively contribute to service development and quality initiatives within the department.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and reliability to meet the needs of a busy and expanding day surgery service.
  • Be able to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Thrive under pressure while maintaining high standards of patient care.
  • Have proven management or leadership experience.
  • Be flexible and adaptable in your working approach and hours (as shift patterns may vary throughout the week).
  • Have recent experience in general surgery and/or day surgery.
  • Be committed to ongoing professional development, with evidence of continuing education.

Qualifications
  • NMC Registered Nurse
  • Mentorship or Teaching/assessing qualification
  • Evidence of leadership, management and specialty development.
Desirable criteria
  • Diploma/Degree
  • Senior Band 5 development pathway
  • Aspiring Band 6 course, A minimum of 12 to 18 month of post registration experience
  • Evidence of working in a surgical environment
  • Strong Verbal, non‑verbal and written communication skills
  • Evidence of leadership skills, such as leading a team and mentoring
  • A positive attitude and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances, assist senior staff with implementing changes and act as a role model
  • IT skills, proficiency in relevant software such as excel, office and EPR
  • The ability to manage complex cases and work independently, taking on increased responsibilities
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team and collaborate with other professionals
  • Experience in scrub/Recovery/endoscopy and the admission and discharge of patients
