Main duties of job

The aim of SRC is to provide a holistic, multidisciplinary, rehabilitation driven and ongoing care service to stroke patients, to maximise their recovery, functional independence and psychological wellbeing after stroke. In addition, SRC cares for a cohort of severely frail patients whose needs often encompass an End-of-Life Care approach which can be complex, intense, unstable or unpredictable.

You will join a team of Consultant Geriatricians, Stroke Physicians, Resident Doctors and wider Nursing and multidisciplinary Colleagues in delivering this model of care.

Serving a local population of 475,000 people living in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, the stroke department treats around 1400 suspected stroke patients per year, with 700 confirmed stroke cases, and receives over 1200 referrals to the TIA service. The stroke team work closely with colleagues across Acute and Emergency Medicine, Interventional Neuroradiology and Medicine to deliver the stroke pathway including thrombolysis and thrombectomy.

The service is currently implementing an updated clinical model ensuring delivery of optimal patient pathways in line with recognised clinical standards and the national clinical guidelines for stroke. University Hospital of Wales is now (from 1st July 2025) operational as the South Wales Thrombectomy Centre, providing thrombectomy services on a super-regional basis to the whole of South Wales in collaboration with North Bristol NHS Trust.

The stroke service operates across the emergency unit, TIA outpatients, an 18 bedded acute stroke unit, 38 bedded stroke rehab centre and a community based early supported discharge service. The Stroke Rehabilitation Centre provides ongoing specialist in-patient care and rehabilitation for people with stroke from the Cardiff and Vale locality.
