Main duties of the job

The aim of SRC is to provide a holistic, multidisciplinary, rehabilitation-driven and ongoing care service to stroke patients, to maximise their recovery, functional independence and psychological wellbeing after stroke. In addition, SRC cares for a cohort of severely frail patients whose needs often encompass an End-of-Life Care approach which can be complex, intense, unstable or unpredictable.

You will join a team of Consultant Geriatricians, Stroke Physicians, Resident Doctors and wider Nursing and multidisciplinary Colleagues in delivering this model of care.

Job responsibilities

Schedule details: The role includes weekday duties and optional weekend and on‑call coverage. Daytime hours are typically from 9 to 1 and 1 to 5 with ward rounds, patient reviews, MDT meetings, SPA sessions, outpatient clinics, and assistance on the 18‑bed acute stroke unit and 38‑bed rehabilitation centre. Weekend and out‑of‑hours on‑call duties are optional and may form part of a 7‑day cover model with time off in lieu.

Qualifications & Training
Essential
  • MBBS or recognised equivalent
  • Full registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council at time of appointment
  • Applicants shall have completed at least four years' full‑time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part‑time or flexible basis), at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty, or as a fixed‑term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty, or shall have equivalent experience and competencies
  • Applicants that are either partially or non‑UK trained will be required to show evidence of equivalence to UK qualifications
Desirable
  • Academic excellence (prizes, merits, distinctions etc.)
  • Higher degree e.g. FRCP Part 1 or evidence of equivalent qualification.
Clinical Effectiveness, Teaching & Research
Essential
  • Experience of conducting clinical audit
  • Ability to use the evidence base and clinical audit to support decision‑making
  • Evidence of engaging in clinical governance: reporting errors and learning from errors
  • An understanding of the current NHS environment, particularly in relation to reforms, initiatives and issues
  • Evidence of interest in, and experience of, teaching, where required in the post
  • If appropriate, demonstrates an understanding of the principles of research

  • Evidence of involvement in clinical audit
  • Assessment of emergencies
  • Commitment to Clinical Risk Management and Clinical Governance
  • Commitment to teaching both medical and non‑medical staff
Communication and Language Skills
Essential
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clinical colleagues, colleagues in pathology, support staff, patients and relatives
  • Good knowledge of, and ability to use, spoken and written English
  • For most non‑EEA applicants, there is a requirement for appropriate scores in the academic International English Language Test System (IELTS) and Occupational English Test (OET).
Desirable
  • if appropriate, ability to present effectively to an audience, using a variety of methods, and to respond to questions and queries.
