Specialty Doctor in Ophthalmology

This post offers significant clinical, laser and surgical exposure with opportunity to develop subspecialty experience. The post is also suitable for those seeking to gain CESR and varied subspecialty experience. The post offers independent surgical, laser and clinical sessions. Research and Audit is actively encouraged and supported in the department with ample opportunities. The post is for a permanent contract.

The post is offered with a job plan of 10 Professional Activities (PAs). On‑call duties (1:8-1:9) are offered based on relevant experience and departmental need.

Main duties of the job

As a valued member of the Ophthalmology Team, the post holder will be involved in a wide range of sub specialism including:

  • EERS/Emergency Duties (Eye Emergency Referral Service) – Providing referral triage, emergency and urgent diagnosis and treatment. Liaising with senior medical staff, including registrars, non‑consultant career grade doctors or consultants regarding all cases requiring admission or general anaesthesia. Assisting senior medical staff with emergency surgery. Providing cover for colleagues on leave as indicated in the duty rota. Attending other hospitals to see patients on an emergency basis when required. Performing duties during emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, and consulting with colleagues both senior and junior where practicable.
  • Theatre Activity – Provide support in theatres and undertake independent theatre sessions in line with abilities.
  • Ward Rounds – Attending ward rounds and examination of pre‑ and post‑operative patients. Undertaking ward duties to cover leave and provide continuity of care.
