Specialist Pharmacist - Cancer Services

Division: Cancer & Core Clinical Services

Care Group: Diagnostics and Therapies

Salary: £55,690 - £62,682 per annum

We are recruiting for a Specialist Pharmacist - Cancer Services who shares our ambition to deliver the Best of Care by the Best People and has the drive to take us forward, ensuring the Trust remains the first choice for patients and staff.

Working closely with the Lead Pharmacist - Clinical services, the post holder will provide direct patient care and have responsibilities for supporting, managing and developing specific aspects of the Trust-wide Clinical Pharmacy Service including:

  • Operationally managing ward rostering and ward cover
  • Being the clinical lead for drug shortages
  • Leading clinical training and clinical induction

The post holder will also provide and develop clinical pharmacy services to certain specialties and will work closely with the Lead Pharmacist - Education & Quality Development to develop and implement a clinically focused medical education training programme in line with KMMS and KCH curricula.

Main duties

The role involves overseeing and improving clinical pharmacy services, including organizing rotas and implementing policies to enhance patient care. Responsibilities include leading service initiatives, developing prescribing guidelines, and providing specialized clinical advice to healthcare professionals. The position also involves developing and delivering training programs for medical students, monitoring drug expenditure, and implementing cost-saving measures. The role encompasses leading and participating in research projects within Pharmacy and managing and developing clinical pharmacy staff. The role requires strong leadership, effective resource management, and adherence to professional standards to ensure high-quality patient care and service delivery.

Job responsibilities

Clinical Leadership: Take charge of enhancing and overseeing clinical pharmacy services, ensure smooth operations through rota organization and policy implementation to improve patient care and outcomes. Lead service initiatives and contribute to the development of evidence-based prescribing guidelines, providing expert clinical advice to healthcare teams.

Education Development: Develop and deliver comprehensive training programs for medical students, fostering collaboration with the Medical Education Team. Support teaching activities and align with educational objectives.

Financial Management: Monitor and optimize drug expenditure, identify cost-saving opportunities and implement strategies for cost-effective prescribing practices.

Person Specification

Qualifications (Essential)

  • Masters Degree in Pharmacy
  • Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council as a Pharmacist in the UK (or eligible)
  • Specialist postgraduate qualification such as clinical diploma or equivalent experience
  • Independent prescriber not essential

Knowledge (Essential)

  • Knowledge of regulatory legislation and guidelines
  • Expert knowledge across a range of pharmacy services; able to provide highly specialist advice
  • Strong knowledge of medicines in Haematology & Oncology

Experience (Essential)

  • Significant experience in clinical haematology, oncology and Aseptic services
  • Proven experience delivering responsibilities to time in previous roles
  • Experience delivering a clinical service in the Specialist Cancer services area
  • Experience managing or supervising projects and teams

Skills (Essential)

  • Problem-solving, root-cause analysis and solution proposal for complex problems
  • Ability to manage and support others; advanced IT skills (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Plan, organise and manage services; manage supply chain
  • Plan and organise research/audit activities; influencing and negotiating skills
  • Experience in handling complex and sensitive information
