Specialist Clinical Physiologist

Hours: 37.5 hours (Full time/part-time considered, fixed term maternity cover, up to 12 months)

An opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified, enthusiastic and highly motivated individual to cover maternity leave on a fixed term contract lasting up to 12 months. The department is based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, providing a regional service, and offers a comprehensive range of investigations.

Applicants should be a qualified Clinical Physiologist in Neurophysiology. You should also have or be in the process of obtaining AHCS or HCPC professional registration.

Main duties of the job

As a specialist clinical physiologist you will be undertaking a range of clinical investigations including:

  • Routine, sleep and portable EEG recording on patients of all ages with a wide variety of medical conditions.
  • Multi-modality evoked potentials
  • Physiologist led CTS screening
  • Ambulatory EEG recording
  • Assisting with paediatric Video Telemetry

The suitable candidate will be competent and experienced in both basic and specialised techniques (although training can be provided) and experience of working with children would be an advantage.

Job responsibilities

Performs a range of complex and highly complex diagnostic neurophysiological investigations on patients of all ages from a range of specialties suffering from a wide variety of medical disorders including those with may be neurological, psychiatric and/or learning difficult in nature.

These will be undertaken in the dedicated environment of the neurophysiological unit or in a non-dedicated environment i.e. wards and intensive therapy unit in the Trust (some cross site working will be required).

Training & Qualifications
  • BTEC HNC/D in MPPM/BSc Hons Clinical Physiology (Neurophysiology BSc (Hons)
  • Clinical Physiology (Neurophysiology) or equivalent formal specialist training (other appropriate qualifications e.g. BTEC HNC/D in MPPM/or equivalent experience + professional exam ECNE Part I) plus knowledge of specialist procedures acquired through specialist courses or training/experience) or equivalent
  • ECNE Part I
  • AHCS Registration
  • ECNE Part II
  • Msc or equivalent
  • Training and Assessing qualification.
  • Specialist training/courses
Experience
  • Ability to perform a basic range of Neurophysiological investigations.
  • Practical experience and familiarity with the range of basic Neurophysiological investigations
  • Able to perform routine EEG investigations without supervision in the laboratory and on the ward
  • Able to perform non-routine and emergency EEG investigations, multi-modality evoked potentials, basic Nerve Conduction Studies and assist with EMG and NCS clinics
  • Supervisory experience
  • Specialist skills and/or knowledge within a specialist field of interest.
  • Formal teaching and/or supervision of junior staff

  • Sensitive understanding of children as well as adults who may be suffering from a wide variety of medical disorders including those which may be neurological or psychiatric in nature
  • Ability to communicate complex and sensitive information in a variety of forms to patients, relatives and carers including children and patients with learning or physical disabilities

  • Able to interpret specialist Neurophysiological investigation results and patient conditions.
  • Able to undertake complex hand/eye co-ordination tasks such as electrode placement and dexterity and co-ordination for use of diagnostic equipment e.g. applying large number of electrodes on a neonate in special care conditions

  • Requires highly developed physical skills including accurate eye to hand coordination
  • Able to maintain prolonged concentration for specific tasks
