Job Summary

This is an exciting time to join the pathology team in Dorset. We are currently making great progress with our vision to create a first class integrated pathology service for Dorset.

The ‘One Dorset Pathology’ service in Dorset County Hospital, Poole Hospital and The Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals will provide clinicians, patients and carers with a consistent and high standard of service across the area and maximise efficiency in the use of resources.

Staff will be able to develop to their full potential and substantial investment has been agreed, offering opportunities for service development and state‑of‑the‑art modernisation.

Main Duties of the Job

The successful applicant will have experience in Biochemistry and/or Haematology & Blood Transfusion. The department operates a combined Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry service and after training you will be expected to become integrated as a full member of the busy department working flexibly within a 37.5 hour week. Participation in the 24/7 shift system, once trained, is expected and brings an additional payment at agenda for change pay rates.

The laboratories are approved for HCPC training and are accredited to ISO15189:2012.

Education Qualifications & Training
  • Completion of Specialist Portfolio in a blood sciences specialty or equivalent advanced post‑graduate experience in at least one of: Haematology, Biochemistry, Blood bank
  • HPC Registration (Health Professional Council)
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
Knowledge & Experience
  • Practical analytical skills associated with Blood Transfusion and Haematology/Coagulation or Biochemistry in its routine service setting
  • Availability to work nights and weekends, as part of a team as well as independently
  • An understanding of analytical/diagnostic pathology at an appropriate level
Skills & Competencies
  • Experience of working in a UKAS and MHRA Blood Sciences accredited laboratory
  • Ability to work methodically, work under pressure and adapt to changing demands appropriately
  • Competent in using pathology computer systems
  • Good attention to detail and accuracy
  • Competence in the assessment of QA data and in the application of QC results to routine setting
  • Be able to speak English as necessary to undertake role
  • Good organisational and communication skills
