Role Overview
We are expanding our Sonography team to support ultrasound services across West Suffolk Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, including the main West Suffolk Hospital site and community locations in Newmarket, Thetford and Sudbury. The successful candidate will be self‑motivated, diligent, and committed to delivering excellent patient care. The role includes a 7% recruitment and retention premia and offers flexible working with consideration for condensed and part‑time hours.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake obstetric, general and gynaecological ultrasound imaging, including fetal anomaly screening, within local and national guidelines.
- Take responsibility for patient care, maintaining dignity and attending to physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual needs.
- Operate complex, expensive equipment safely and autonomously, selecting appropriate instruments and protocols.
- Manage workload prioritisation, ensuring clinical needs and urgency are met efficiently.
- Provide timely, efficient and courteous ultrasound services to agreed departmental standards.
- Work in other community ultrasound departments when required.
- Use specialist knowledge to discuss, advise and accept referrals, and refer to other disciplines where appropriate.
- Understand and utilise departmental data flows, entering, retrieving and correcting information as necessary.
- Interpret ultrasound images and record findings for other clinicians, including obstetric and growth data via CRIS system.
- Communicate effectively with staff, carers and patients, applying empathy, tact and persuasion, especially with special or difficult patient populations.
- Manage patient images and data, including processing and archiving.
- Operate IT systems and conduct departmental administration tasks such as appointment booking.
- Advise patients on procedures, waiting times and examination preparation.
- Adhere to safe working practices, maintaining good posture to prevent musculo‑skeletal disorders.
- Follow all department and Trust policies and procedures, updating mandatory training as required.
- Behaviour courteously and professionally in line with Trust values.
- Carry out daily and weekly checks of the emergency crash trolley where relevant.
- Act as Duty Sonographer when required, supporting day‑to‑day ultrasound service organisation.
- Propose and implement changes to policies and procedures.
- Encourage cohesive working arrangements and monitor patient throughput, reallocating resources as necessary.
- Complete appraisals and participate in appraisal programmes.
- Attend seminars, courses and CPD activities to maintain professional expertise.
- Assist with training and support of ultrasound students and junior doctors.
- Contribute to achieve the Quality Standard for Imaging (QSI) quality mark.
- Participate in departmental and Trust audits, clinical trials and quality assurance procedures.
- Adhere to local and national guidelines, SOPs and clinical governance standards.
