Job description

Salary: Band 9, £41,133 - £47,712. Location: Warrington. Hours/Contract: 37 Hours, Permanent. Working for: North East Regional Organised Crime Unit (NEROCU).

The North East Regional Organised Crime Unit is one of ten Regional Organised Crime Units (ROCU) in England and Wales who lead the regional response to tackling serious and organised crime whilst supporting local and national delivery.

NEROCU comprises of specialist teams delivering across intelligence, operations, investigations, cyber, economic, technical and digital capabilities.

The role

Join a unique and high-impact team, based at the National Crime Agency (NCA) in Warrington, where you'll work alongside NEROCU colleagues in one of the most sensitive and dynamic operational environments in UK policing.

This role offers a rare opportunity to contribute directly to national security and serious crime investigations, combining strategic oversight with frontline intelligence work. As part of this specialist unit, you'll be at the forefront of tackling Serious and Organised Crime across the North East.

Responsibilities
  • Provide fast-paced Operational support to the NEROCU by gathering, analysing, and disseminating intelligence in accordance with Legislation and Policy.
  • Ensure the quality, secure handling, and dissemination of intelligence, maintaining confidentiality, sensitivity, and duty of care, in line with NEROCU policy.
  • Build good working relationships with both internal and external partners, including other Police Forces, NCA, and other Law Enforcement Agencies (LEA).
  • Conduct intelligence development, research, and analysis in support of the Sanctioned Operations on behalf of NEROCU.
  • Contribute to the acquisition and development of tactical and strategic intelligence relating to Serious and Organised Crime affecting the North East region, and the UK Policing landscape.
  • Lead by example, ensuring the Police Code of Ethics are upheld whilst ensuring the highest standards.
  • Proactively manage performance, attendance, and wellbeing of the staff you supervise in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Oversee the day-to-day administration of the department and perform supervisory functions including budgetary management.
  • Report to the embedded department head and equivalent Sgt Supervisors within the NEROCU in support of daily operational activity and staff management.

You will be required to work shifts, including early, late, and weekends. (Police Staff posts will attract the appropriate unsocial hours allowances commensurate with the shift pattern).

Essential Skills
  • Experience working in intelligence or information.
  • Proven ability to manage serious and complex investigations.
  • Understanding of intelligence and evidence use in law enforcement.
  • Working knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Investigatory Powers Act (IPA), Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA), and the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
  • Ability to identify intelligence gaps, prioritise tasks, and solve problems.
  • Familiarity with NIM and NPCC MOPI guidance.
  • Knowledge of police systems, legislation, and procedures (e.g., GDPR, CPIA).
  • Strong IT skills and clear, professional communication (verbal and written).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team under pressure.
  • Skilled in managing Threat, Harm, and Risk in time-critical situations.
  • A flexibility to work extended hours where required, often at short notice.
Desirable skills
  • An interest in, and be willing to, maintain personal knowledge of changes in IT and communications technology.
  • An up-to-date knowledge of the full range of covert investigation techniques including, but not limited to, surveillance, undercover operatives, and CHIS.
