Site HSE Lead, Tanfield (Home of Penn State Pretzels) – On‑site | Monday – Friday

About the role

As part of the Site Leadership Team, you will lead the way in creating a safe, compliant and proactive working environment. You will be a key influencer, helping us build a strong safety culture through coaching, capability building and colleague engagement. Your responsibilities will include supporting the implementation of our Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) policies, embedding ISO 45001 and ISO 14001, managing relationships with regulatory bodies, overseeing audits and leading on risk profiling and claims management.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement site‑wide procedures to ensure legal compliance.
  • Lead the creation and roll‑out of robust HSE processes aligned with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001, including supporting operational and project teams to meet regulatory requirements and embedding the Integrated Work System (IWS) HSE Pillar across the site.
  • Build HSE capabilities and drive a positive safety culture through coaching, mentoring and colleague engagement; promote safe behaviours and embed a proactive, prevention‑first mindset across all levels of the site.
  • Track performance and drive continuous improvement: monitor key HSE metrics, analyse trends, present performance data to the Safety Committee, Site Leadership Team and Executive reviews, and use insight to shape strategic plans and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Manage the site HSE budget and capital allocation: identify and prioritise risk reduction opportunities, oversee the annual HSE capital spend and ensure resources are used effectively to support long‑term improvements.
  • Manage claims and work closely with insurers and inspectors during investigations.
  • Act as a visible and influential leader across the site: proactive member of the Site Leadership Team, champion HSE initiatives, support the delivery of site OGSM and CBN targets, lead internal audits and interface with regulatory bodies.

Qualifications & Requirements
  • Recognised HSE qualifications: NEBOSH Health and Safety Diploma (NVQ Level 6 equivalent) and IEMA Environmental Certificate essential; IEMA Environmental Diploma preferred.
  • Internal auditing qualification and membership of IOSH.
  • Experience in FMCG manufacturing and leadership: fast‑paced manufacturing environment, part of a Leadership Team, using influence to drive cultural and performance improvements.
  • Strong technical and analytical skills: confident using Microsoft Office tools, interpreting HSE data and trends, and applying insights to shape strategic plans; familiar with risk profiling and managing claims processes.
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills: able to engage colleagues at all levels, build strong relationships and coach others to improve behaviours and embed a safety‑first mindset.
  • Flexible, proactive and collaborative approach: energised by change, comfortable working under pressure, able to travel to other locations with occasional overnight stays.
