Frimley Health invites you to join our friendly and supportive team of nurses in Heatherwood Hospital Day Surgery Unit.
We have recently sought and achieved GIRFT accreditation as a Surgical Hub. You will also learn about Lithotripsy which prevents and greatly reduces emergency admissions.
This role is perfect for experienced surgical nurses looking for a new challenge working in a state‑of‑the‑art building with a forward‑thinking team.
The Day Surgery Unit runs from Monday to Saturday 07:00‑22:00. You will be expected to work a mixture of early and late shifts.
We are proud of our building and we have Electronic Patient Records, meaning joined up care and communication throughout Frimley Health.
Unit consists of 22 individual patient PODs. We admit and care for patients having a variety of general and local anaesthetic procedures. 95% of day case patients are discharged successfully on the day.
We work together to ensure the best possible experience for our patients, reflected in Friends and family feedback received monthly.
Main Duties of the Job
To work clinically providing visible leadership, direction, co‑ordination and forward planning to ensure the smooth and safe running of the Day Surgery.
To support the Senior Sister, ensuring the department ethos reflects the Trust values and assist with delivery of patient safety and a good patient experience.
The Sister’s role focuses on customer care, quality & safety including challenging poor practice. Clinical excellence is essential alongside managerial responsibilities of leading a team including performance, appraisals and managing sickness.
Key Tasks & Responsibilities
- Act as a credible clinical role model.
- Undertake operational duties to maintain efficiency and patient safety.
- Deliver and audit Trust and national standards.
- Support and provide leadership for the nursing team.
- Act as a mentor and assist on induction of new staff and students, providing supervision where appropriate.
- Participate in recruitment and selection of new staff.
- Aware of the complaints procedure and deal with first level complaints as necessary.
- Act in accordance with policies and nursing procedures as per Trust policy.
- Ensure confidentiality of patient records and high standards of nursing documentation.
- Escalate as appropriate any untoward incidents.
- Participate in ongoing clinical supervision.
Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
- Responsible for assessment of care needs, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care without supervision.
- Pro‑actively co‑ordinate patients’ admissions and discharge arrangements in accordance with Trust policy.
- Ensure all nursing practice within the clinical area complies with Trust Nursing policies and procedures.
- Always comply with the NMC Code of Conduct (2008).
- Communicate effectively and liaise with all health care staff as appropriate.
- Demonstrate a collaborative approach to planning care through effective communication and decision making between the multi‑disciplinary team, patients and significant others.
- Consolidate and extend own clinical skills in all aspects of nursing, furthering own professional knowledge in a rapidly changing environment.
- Provide clinical leadership and development support to the nursing team.
- Work with the Ward Senior Sister/Charge Nurse to address clinical competence issues.
- Contribute to the local resolution, investigation and follow‑action of any informal or formal complaints.
- Prioritise own work and others to ensure the ward/department is managed effectively.
- Provide specialist knowledge and expertise within ward/department.
- Lead quality initiatives to promote and ensure nursing care is evidence and research based.
Person Specification – Qualifications
- Current NMC Registration.
- Awareness of current professional nursing issues.
- Evidence of qualification to undertake the supervision, teaching and assessing of students and junior nursing team.
- Evidence of continuous professional development (CPD).
- ACLP course completed / ongoing.
Desirable – Qualifications & Experience
- Degree in Nursing or other relevant field or demonstrate experience working to this level.
- Post Registration qualification in specialty.
- Orthopaedic / Surgical Course.
- At least 6 months post‑registration experience in an inpatient setting.
- Knowledge of coaching and mentoring practices and tools.
- Knowledge of quality improvement tools, techniques and methods.
- Proven teaching and assessing skills.
- Clinical supervision skills.
- LCS Level 1b certification.
