Job description
What we're looking for

Ship Structure Specialist - Liquefied Gas Containment Systems. Location: Southampton, UK. The role is based at our Southampton office with a flexible mix of home and regular office working.

You will be part of a dedicated global team supporting a growing area of the business, working on a variety of new-build and existing ship projects for builders around the world. Responsibilities include design appraisal, design support work, and answering a wide range of technical queries to support our local and global clients and site surveyors.

Training and professional development opportunities are available. You will be part of a wider team working alongside engineering, software and consultancy departments. This position is offered at Specialist level; depending on experience, a Senior Specialist option may be considered.

The role
  • Work as a technical member of the Specialized Ship Structures team carrying out design appraisal, independent calculations, and consultancy against Class Rules and statutory codes. Primarily work with LNG membrane containment systems, with potential involvement in other gas containment systems (e.g., Ammonia, Hydrogen) and other ship types as needed.
  • Contribute ideas and creative solutions for structural problems using direct calculations and the application of Lloyd's Register Rules and Regulations and other international standards and codes.
  • Provide technical advice to internal and external clients globally, including designers, shipyards, LR surveyors and specialists.
  • Contribute to Technology and Rule Development Projects to keep LR Rules up to date with industry innovations.
  • Assist the team leader and senior team members in bid and win processes by accurately estimating time requirements.
  • Manage plan approval projects, monitor progress and spend against budget and contractual requirements.
  • Actively seek to ensure client satisfaction and generate new opportunities with clients.
  • The above description does not preclude other duties assigned by the Specialised Ship Structures team lead or line manager.
What you bring
  • A degree in naval architecture, structural engineering, mechanical engineering or equivalent from a recognised tertiary institution.
  • Experience of ship structural design (including fatigue calculations) and applying Class Rules to the design and construction of liquid gas containment systems. Desirable: practical application of LR's Gas Ship Rules & Gas Fuelled Ship Rules and the IMO IGC/IGF Codes.
  • Experience working in shipyards and/or for ship-owners is desirable.
  • Working knowledge of regulatory bodies (LR, IACS, IMO, flag States and EU) and how they operate and interact.
  • Knowledge of the structural configurations and arrangements of liquefied gas ships, their containment systems and supporting arrangements.
  • Understanding of sloshing, factors causing it, and structural strength to withstand it.
  • Understanding of operation of liquefied gas ships, including loading and unloading.
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution; working towards Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
  • Proficiency in English (written and oral) for technical reports and design appraisal documentation.
  • Understanding of the responsibilities of a Classification Society and the interface between Class Rules and Statutory Regulations.
