Job description
Overview

Mersey and West Lancashire NHS Trust portering roles involve moving patients and equipment, providing general support across wards and departments, and delivering a high standard of patient and visitor service.

Responsibilities
  • Moving patients in beds and chairs, and transporting medical equipment and furniture between departments.
  • Logistics and deliveries: transferring specimens, pharmacy boxes, and other important items throughout the hospital.
  • Waste collection: collecting various types of waste, including potentially hazardous materials.
  • General support: providing assistance and direction to patients and visitors; supporting the Portering team leader to deliver a customer-focused service; delivering an efficient and effective portering service to patients, visitors, and all wards/departments.
  • Maintain the patient environment to a high standard and adhere to safe working practices in all aspects of environmental/hygiene management.
  • Ensure economic use of all materials and promote good practice to minimise waste.
  • Quality management: maintain and improve all aspects of the service; participate in staff involvement groups for quality where appropriate; maintain good customer relations with patients and other staff groups.
  • Hygiene management: comply with all legal food safety requirements; maintain high standards of personal hygiene per infection control guidance.
  • Human resources management: comply with Trust policies; provide guidance to new or existing staff; attend required training and annual refresher sessions as part of development.
  • Operational duties: collect refuse (clinical, domestic, confidential, special and recyclable); clean hospital entrances; maintain a safe and secure environment with routine security checks and fire alarm responses; issue keys; ensure safe patient movement (including unescorted imaging; movement of case notes per confidentiality and data protection policies); collect and distribute linen; move furniture and equipment; deliver meals and supplies using road vehicles; perform daily safety checks on vehicles; transport bloods and specimens to labs; transport blood to pathology/theatre; assist with transfer of bodies where applicable; store keeping and stock rotation; postal duties; medical gas checking and replacement; car parking duties including tokenIssuance.
  • Compliance with pharmacy work procedures as required.
