Job Overview

To work as a skilled member of a multi-disciplinary team to deliver a comprehensive patient‑focused service within the contraceptive and sexual health department known as The Riverside Clinic. This role involves the organisation and management of the department, including the supervision of staff, teaching of students and further development of nurse‑led services.

Main Responsibilities
  • Supervise junior staff via monitoring, mentoring, clinical supervision and reflective practice.
  • Demonstrate in‑depth knowledge of child protection and vulnerable adult issues and support staff to act on concerns.
  • Provide health‑advising skills: partner notification, provider referrals and completion of patient tasks on the clinic EPR system.
  • Perform venepuncture as required.
  • Stain slides and perform microscopy for detection and diagnosis of sexual infections after appropriate training.
  • Triage patients and act as a resource for questions concerning sexual health.
  • Assist with multi‑disciplinary care and treatment of HIV patients, liaising with the department HIV team.
  • Coordinate nurse‑led follow‑up clinics.
  • Use departmental protocols to undertake a sexual and contraceptive history, examination and screening for sexually acquired infection (both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients).
  • Take detailed sexual history and discuss partner notification.
  • Work within the SSHA (Society of Sexual Health Advisers) guidelines – Code of Ethics, Code of Conduct and partner notification policy.
  • Examine patients and take appropriate swabs/samples in accordance with BASHH (British Association for Sexual Health and HIV).
  • Give treatments as per Patient Group Directions.
  • Perform cryotherapy and advise on home wart treatment.
  • Provide contraceptive advice, perform pregnancy tests, give emergency contraception if required, discuss safer sex issues, demonstrate condom use and issue condoms or C‑cards.
  • Commence appropriate contraception after assessing patient needs.
  • Give vaccinations, treatments or contraception by IM injection as required.
  • Have in‑depth knowledge of Fraser guidelines for provision of contraception and sexual health to young people under 16.
  • Assess Fraser competence and be aware of safeguarding referral pathways for children.
  • Complete an additional assessment template for spotting signs of child sexual exploitation for all attendees under 18.
