Senior Nurse for Youth Justice

The Children in Care and Youth Justice service are jointly commissioned by North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board and Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board. The service operates a countywide model and is responsible for:

  • Supporting the health needs of children and young people open to the Youth Justice Service and Criminal Justice Liaison and Diversion (CJL&D) service supporting vulnerable young people whilst in contact with the criminal justice system.

The post holder will be primarily responsible for supporting the health needs of children and young people open to the youth justice service. They will also be required to work with children and young people who are subject to a care order, promoting seamless healthcare.

This post covers North Cumbria, the base will be confirmed with the successful candidate.

There will be an expectation that the post holder will also work from Youth Justice bases in Workington and Carlisle.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to:

  • Manage an individual clinical caseload
  • Be able to assess holistic health and wellbeing needs using a trauma-informed approach
  • Develop and implement brief care package for common health needs—for example sleeping, lifestyle, sexual health, life skills, low mood/anxiety/emotional regulation/stress management and evaluate their effectiveness.
  • Coordinate health services across a range of providers, promoting seamless, continuous health care
  • Help develop specialist pathways of health support to improve health outcomes for children within the criminal justice system.
  • Act as the health primary point of contact for young people, their families and professionals
  • Foster effective working relationships with partner agencies in order to promote interagency collaboration
  • Support the Named Nurse and Clinical Lead Manager in meeting their statutory and commissioned responsibilities.
  • Work autonomously as well as part of team

  • oCurrent Registered Nurse - RN/Child/LD/MH
  • oBSc (Hons) Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) in School Nursing
  • oQualification in mental health
  • oQualification in sexual Health
  • oTeaching and Assessing in Clinical Practice or equivalent
Knowledge and Experience
  • oSubstantial experience of managing an extensive and complex caseload at a senior nurse level
  • oExperience of assessing health needs, formulating care plans
  • oAn understanding of child development
  • oUnderstanding of the Mental Health Act/Mental Health Capacity
  • oAbility to provided targeted health support through brief health interventions
  • oExperience and understanding of working within safeguarding procedures and guidelines
  • oUnderstanding of the determinants of health and health inequalities.
  • oKnowledge of relevant legislation and guidance such as The Childrens Act (2004), Working Together to Safeguard Children (2023) and Statutory guidance Promoting the health and wellbeing of looked after children (2015) Mental Capacity and other relevant documents
  • oExperience working as a school nurse/ working with young people open to YJS/children in care
  • o Leading and supporting staff
  • oExperience of multi-agency, including Third Sector working
