Overview

SENIOR NETWORK ENGINEER required in Welwyn Garden City

Duration: 3 months. Hybrid working 3 days a week office-based. Rate: Competitive via Umbrella company. Our client is a blue chip FMCG and retail brand serving millions of customers weekly from around the globe. With over 6 stores internationally, this is a well-known household name offering exciting opportunities.

Responsibilities

• Represent Infrastructure/Systems Engineering across Tesco Technology and with suppliers.
• Balance exceptional delivery for customers with the needs of the business; engage teams and colleagues accordingly.
• Be an expert and often the first layer of management of people or projects.
• Architect, design and deliver solutions using existing infrastructure components; implement new infrastructure technologies and establish best practice for their adoption.
• Strategic resolution of problems not seen before and initiate change to ease future handling.
• Contribute to the Technology Roadmap for Tesco Technology Data Centers.
• Evaluate new tools and techniques, understanding their value and impact.
• Understand current application development techniques (12 factor app) and their implications for infrastructure.
• Lead group design discussions and present with authority to varied audiences.
• Collaborate with Software Engineers to understand requirements and assist in consuming Infrastructure seamlessly.
• Demonstrate leadership by coaching and mentoring system engineers at more junior levels.
• Ensure that own team's designs are high quality and consider impacts on other infrastructure areas.
• Keep technical skills up to date and explore new technologies for potential benefits to the Technology team and Tesco.
• Introduce automation to day-to-day work.
• Proficient in spoken and written English; able to communicate with leaders and engineers.

Skills / Experience Required

• Experience designing and deploying solutions for large, complex global organisations.
• Analytical and structured approach to design, process, and advanced troubleshooting.
• Ability to translate Tesco Technology and business strategies into technology roadmaps and innovative solutions.
• Ability to produce and maintain high-quality HLD/LLD and Standards documentation.
• Self-starter who takes ownership and accountability; willing to go the extra mile across project lifecycles.
• Builds and maintains positive relationships within and across teams.
• Provides technical leadership and mentoring within teams.
• Effective written and verbal communication; able to present designs, strategies, and concepts to Senior and Junior staff alike.
• Takes ownership to stay up-to-date with latest industry technologies and supplier solutions such as SDN and SDWAN.

Technology Skills (minimum 3 of the following)

• Excellent practical experience in designing/building, operating large-scale, Multilayer Switching and Routing using Arista/Juniper/Cisco equipment in WAN and LAN; knowledge of Multicast, Port Channeling, MLAG, FHRP, GLBP, VRF, QoS.
• Strong knowledge of WAN technologies and protocols (MPLS, WAN Optimisation, CoS, DWDM); experience with major Global Communications suppliers is a plus.
• Solid understanding of ISO/OSI model, troubleshooting and design; Routing Protocols (BGP, OSPF, IGRP), DNS, DHCP, IPAM and TCP/UDP standards.
• Experience with Cisco/Arista Spine/Leaf topologies.
• Knowledge of cloud networking (Azure, AWS).
• Experience with VPN technologies and related security (Public/Private Key Encryption, TLS/SSL, certificates, GRE, DMVPN).
• Experience with load balancing and global/DNS balancing (F5, Cisco ACE, Citrix NetScaler).
• Understanding of Internet/Web technologies and cloud-based services (CDN, Proxy/Caching, SSL Offloading); knowledge of suppliers like Akamai, Blue Coat, Zscaler.
• Understanding of browser-based technologies and protocols (HTML, HTTP/HTTPS, XML).
• Experience with Network Management technologies and protocols (SNMP, NetFlow, IPSLA) and related tools.
