About the Role

A leading education establishment in Edinburgh is looking for an experienced Senior Network Engineer. This is a fantastic opportunity that offers high‑level leadership combined with a broad technical scope, and the chance to shape technological advancements in a vital sector.

Responsibilities

As a key technical lead within the IT function, you will:

• Ensure the stability and continuous improvement of core technology platforms (network, server, telephony, wireless, data centre infrastructure, virtualisation, cloud services, and unified collaboration technologies).
• Design, plan, implement and maintain complex enterprise systems supporting a user base of 3000+ users.
• Operate as a senior member of the IT Services team, combining hands‑on engineering, strategic planning and technical leadership to deliver resilient, high‑availability services with strong cyber security.

The responsibilities are split into five main areas:

• Networking, Telephony and Unified Collaboration
• Server Management & Administration
• Maintenance and Security
• Data Centre Management (Environmental, Storage, Compute, Disaster Recovery, Backup, Virtualisation and Cloud)
• 3rd Line Support and Team Management

Technologies used across the organisation include:

• Edge / Core / Access Infrastructure (Cisco routers, switches, firewalls and managed switches)
• Server / Infrastructure Services (Windows Server, DHCP, Active Directory Group Policy, Mobile Device Management)
• Wireless / BYOD (Cisco Wireless, Cisco CMX, Cisco Identity Services)
• VOIP Telephone solutions (Cisco UCM, Jabber)
• Virtualisation (VMware, vCenter, ESXi)
• Cloud services (AWS, Azure)
• Datacentre (Nexus 9300 DC Switches, Cisco Hyperflex)

Qualifications

• Ideally CCNA / CCNP accreditation
• Strong background in IT project delivery, digital transformation, or systems implementation
• Extensive experience working as a Senior Network Engineer or Architect
• Extensive background working with multiple Cisco technologies within an enterprise‑scale environment
• Excellent problem‑solving skills and ability to think critically under pressure
• Clear and effective communicator, both written and verbal
• Solid grasp of IT security, compliance and governance principles
