Senior Mechanical Engineer

About The Role: Join our dynamic team as a Senior Mechanical Engineer, where you'll lead and develop our in-house Domestic Gas Engineers, ensuring top‑tier delivery of safety checks, repairs, installations, and emergency services. Reporting to the Gas Operations Manager, you'll drive quality, compliance, and performance—both in‑house and across contractor services—while upholding the Council’s legal obligations under Gas Safety regulations.

  • Lead and manage the in‑house gas operatives team to deliver safe, efficient, and cost‑effective gas services, including landlord safety checks and repairs.
  • Oversee out‑of‑hours emergency gas services using internal staff, agency workers, and contractors.
  • Support contractor management to ensure compliance with legislation, technical standards, and Council policies.
  • Develop and deliver training (e.g., toolbox talks, manufacturer‑led sessions) to maintain staff competence and resident safety.
  • Contribute to the creation and revision of gas safety policies and procedures in line with legal and regulatory standards.
  • Conduct health and safety inspections, risk assessments (including COSHH), and implement corrective actions.
  • Mentor gas apprentices to support their progression into qualified engineers.
  • Monitor service performance through feedback and complaints to drive continuous improvement.
  • Manage staff leave and resource planning to maintain safe and effective service delivery.
  • Promote safeguarding of vulnerable individuals encountered during service delivery.
  • Verify staff certifications and competencies, escalating concerns as needed.
  • Supervise voids gas operatives to ensure smooth and safe property turnaround.
  • Ensure provision and maintenance of PPE, tools, and equipment for all operatives.
  • Deliver health and safety inductions, training, and toolbox talks to maintain safe working environments.
  • Investigate and report accidents and incidents, liaising with health and safety advisors.
  • Oversee vehicle checks and ensure transport logs are completed and submitted.
  • Assist in contractor procurement and develop technical specifications for gas services.
  • Stay current with gas safety legislation and best practices through CPD and industry networking.
  • Attend meetings and events as required, including outside normal working hours.
  • Respond to general enquiries and health and safety complaints professionally.
  • Participate in the out‑of‑hours technical support rota, offering guidance to field operatives.
  • Act as deputy for the Gas Operations Manager on gas safety matters when needed.
  • Perform other duties aligned with the role’s grade and responsibilities.
