About the role

An exciting opportunity has become available in our Orica Digital Solutions team as we are seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer for Axis Mining Technology. Axis Mining Technology builds cutting-edge electromechanical instrumentation, data & drilling solutions for the mining, minerals exploration & drilling industries. In this role, you will be a key contributor towards the development & commercialization of this market-shaping technology; including responsibility for creation of project requirements based on stakeholder inputs, designing, developing, testing, and analyzing components to ensure produced parts meet requirements. You will collaborate closely with international cross-functional teams, including marketing, manufacturing, electronics hardware, firmware, and the software team. You will be a pivotal project lead in defining project milestones from conception to execution, ensuring engineering schedules are tracked and met.

What you will be doing
  • Providing technical leadership to the engineering team and beyond
  • Overseeing milestones from conception to execution
  • Planning: Gathering requirements/product specifications
  • Designing: conceptualizing and drafting models
  • Developing: testing and results analysis, refining prototypes by reiteration to ensure product works as intended and meets set out specifications
  • Ensuring project milestones are met and within budget
  • Making sure that once a concept is developed, a seamless interface to the software and the electronics teams exists, to ensure that all subject matter experts are aligned to deliver the finalized product
  • Supporting the execution of projects with the marketing team
What you will bring
  • BEng. in Mechanical Engineering
  • 8 years of mechanical design experience in the product development space
  • Proficiency in CAD software such as OnShape, SolidWorks, Inventor, or Catia
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA), preferably using Ansys
  • Experience with sealing design, shock and vibration, wear / abrasion and extreme pressure environments
  • Knowledge of Design for Assembly (DFA) and Design for Manufacturing (DFM)
  • Excellent understanding of manufacturing processes, material properties, and design principles ideally in extreme environments
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work with cross-functional teams
  • Availability to work with teams in different time zones
  • Leadership skills and the ability to manage work across different teams and multiple projects simultaneously
  • Self-starter profile
  • Project management experience is not compulsory but will be beneficial
