Job overview

An exciting secondment opportunity has become available for 12 months maternity cover at North Manchester General hospital. You will jointly lead the Hepatitis Service as part of the North Manchester Infectious Diseases team which forms part of the Infectious Diseases Managed Single Service at MFT. You will be based at North Manchester General Hospital. You will have a high degree of autonomy, manage your own clinic caseload, possess excellent communication skills and ideally have experience in caring for patients with complex care needs. You will be responsible for their own clinics in a community and hospital setting. You will also have line management responsibility for the Hepatitis team.

Main duties of the job

The NHS in England has an ambition to reduce the levels of hepatitis C and hepatitis B transmission to improve public health outcomes. Which will contribute to the WHO 2030 goals of the elimination of viral hepatitis as a public health threat.
As Public Health England have a strategy to achieve by 2025, which aims to eliminate viral hepatitis as a public health problem, by reducing new viral hepatitis infections by 90% and reduce deaths due to viral hepatitis by 65%.
Greater Manchester has one of the highest prevalence rates for HCV infection in the UK – with estimates from Public Health England that around 17,500 individuals are chronically infected, but just over 10,000 are diagnosed, and only a few thousand have been successfully treated.
The vast majority of individuals with hepatitis B are not aware they have the infection, highlighting the critical need to increase diagnosis rates to decrease the morbidity and mortality associated with this often overlooked infection.
With the roll out of 'Opt out' testing in our Emergency Departments the number of patients being tested and treated for viral hepatitis has increased. Which in turn, increases our clinic capacity and workload.
New treatments are emerging for hepatitis delta, traditionally the most challenging type of viral hepatitis to manage. These advancements are significantly improving the prognosis for patients with this condition.
