Senior Estimator – Civil Engineering

Our client is a well-established, family-founded civil engineering and groundworks contractor with a strong reputation for quality, reliability, and long-term partnerships. With a turnover of approximately £50 million, they continue to expand steadily across the Midlands and wider UK. Operating from a modern head office in Birmingham, the business delivers a wide range of groundworks, infrastructure, and RC frame packages and is recognised for its collaborative culture, stable leadership, and commitment to investing in its people.

About the role

This role involves managing the full tender process from initial opportunity to final submission and handover. You will review and analyse tender documents, coordinate with internal teams, and produce accurate take-offs, BOQs, and analytical pricing. Responsibilities include obtaining and assessing sub-contractor and supplier quotes, evaluating risks and value-engineering options, and ensuring alignment with client programmes.

You will prepare and present tender adjudications, submit detailed proposals, and attend client meetings as required. The role also includes supporting project handovers, maintaining strong client relationships, updating cost databases, and providing clear cost reports and insights to senior management, while assisting in the development of trainee estimators.

Requirements
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in estimating or a closely related role within construction or civil engineering.
  • Familiarity with a range of contract types, including JCT and NEC3 / 4.
  • Strong commercial awareness and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret and evaluate complex data.
  • Understanding of both standard and project-specific risks and opportunities.
  • Practical knowledge of measurement methods such as SMM7, CESSM, Highway MOM, and NRM.
  • Relevant higher-level qualification in Construction, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline.
