Overview

University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust provide emergency services at our purpose built Minor Injuries Unit based at UHCW and at our Urgent Treatment Centre based at St Cross Hospital in Rugby and City of Coventry Health Centre. All sites have dedicated facilities and allocated staff to provide care 7 days a week 24 hours a day. The practitioner (Adult only) within the Minor Injuries Unit/Urgent Treatment Centre is a clinical expert playing a key role in delivering high quality, timely care to patients presenting with minor illness and injury. This is a fast paced, independent role requiring excellent clinical reasoning and decision making skills.

Applicants must hold either a Level 6 or 7 PG Cert/PG diploma in minor injury/illness with demonstratable experience in urgent and emergency care.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking motivated and experienced Emergency Practitioners (Adults Only) who are able to demonstrate that they can see, treat and independently discharge adult patients from our Minor Injuries Unit to join our dynamic team. As a senior member of the team you will be involved in the clinical and managerial aspects of caring for Emergency patients attending our busy department. Primary duties include:

  • Co-ordinate the care of the UTC/MIU patients throughout the care pathway with the multidisciplinary team and clinical services to ensure the effective management of this group of patients.
  • Demonstrate specialist skills, knowledge, and expertise in the management of minor injury and minor illness conditions in line with Scope of practice.
  • Accountable for own actions in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct. Will contribute to corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times.
  • Using advanced history taking skills, obtain a patient history in a systematic manner including pertinent physical, social, emotional, psychological, or environmental factors.

Job responsibilities
  • Using advanced physical assessment skills, undertake physical examination as appropriate, including techniques of look, feel and move, observation, inspection, auscultation, palpation, and percussion, with safe use of diagnostic equipment where appropriate.
  • Order and interpret appropriate laboratory and radiology investigations to distinguish between normal and abnormal findings and relate these to possible diagnoses.
  • Make clinical decisions using analytical and judgmental skills to reach a diagnosis and effectively communicate these decisions, care pathways, and policies to patients/carers and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Develop and implement a plan of healthcare management including treatment and appropriate referral for further evaluation or follow up care; take clinical responsibility for the diagnosis, management and discharge/referral/transfer of the patient and offer health promotion strategies where appropriate.
  • Utilise information and IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient, workforce, and resource data. Responsible for documenting all clinical notes both computerised and paper based.
  • Communicate effectively and work collaboratively with colleagues and other members of the multidisciplinary and multi professional teams to promote the Emergency Practitioner role in patient care.
  • Provide clinical teaching and develop knowledge and skills of junior staff in the Emergency Practitioner team, while remaining up to date with clinical and professional developments; share knowledge and expertise within and outside the organisation.
  • Support resuscitation and stabilisation of adults and children using relevant skills (ILS/PILS/EPALS) as appropriate.
  • Consider safeguarding concerns for adults and children and take appropriate action; liaise with named safeguarding teams as necessary.
