We are currently hiring a Senior Director of Engineering to be based in Berlin, Hamburg or London.
Your mission at Epassi

You, an exceptional and visionary Sr. Director of Engineering will lead the development of our unified mobile and web applications, serving a fast-growing three-sided marketplace. As part of our leadership team, you will be responsible for building a central, world‑class engineering team focused on creating scalable, high‑performance, and delightful consumer‑facing solutions across multiple markets.

Your responsibilities will be

You will define and implement modern engineering practices, drive high‑velocity feature delivery, and strategically leverage Generative AI (Gen AI) to enhance development efficiency and product innovation.

What you'll be doing (daily):
Engineering Leadership
  • Technical Strategy & Architecture: Define and lead the technical strategy to create a unified codebase and client architecture. This unified foundation will seamlessly support both the consumer-facing mobile application (used by Customers and Merchants) and the employer-facing web platform, while also managing the ongoing support for existing, fragmented client solutions.
  • Modern Practices: Define and implement best‑in‑class engineering practices, including CI/CD, testing, code quality, and observability, specifically tailored to maximize velocity and reliability.
  • Gen AI Adoption: Strategically identify and implement the use of Generative AI tools and techniques to accelerate feature delivery, enhance code generation/review, and improve developer experience.
  • Multi‑Market Development: Ensure the application architecture supports rapid deployment and customization for different global markets while maintaining a single, global brand identity.
Team Building & Development
  • Centralized Team: Build, mentor, and scale a high-performing central software engineering team from the ground up, fostering a culture of technical excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Talent Acquisition: Own the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding process for engineers across all levels (front‑end, full‑stack, mobile).
  • Performance Management: Establish clear engineering metrics, performance standards, and career development paths for team members.
Technical Excellence & Architecture
  • Technology Stack Ownership: Drive the ongoing development and maintenance of various technology stacks, with a strategic focus on the progressive adoption of a core technology using React, React Native and TypeScript.
  • Design System: Lead the adoption and rigorous use of a centralized Design System to ensure cross‑platform consistency, accessibility, and high development velocity for multi‑language support.
  • Scalability: Ensure that all systems are architected for large scale, low latency, and high availability, capable of handling rapid user and transaction growth globally.
What you should bring:
  • Experience: 10+ years of progressive experience in software engineering, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role (Director‑level or equivalent at a major technology company) managing large‑scale consumer‑facing products.
  • Technical Stack: Deep, hands‑on expertise with React Native (essential), React and TypeScript.
  • Degree: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
Your language profile:

You speak English fluently.

Your track record:
  • Architectural Expertise: Proven track record of successfully building and scaling multi‑sided marketplace platforms, high‑traffic consumer mobile apps, and enterprise‑grade web applications.
  • DevOps/Velocity: Extensive experience in defining engineering processes that significantly improve developer velocity and code quality, including leveraging modern tools and Gen AI for development enhancement.
  • Global/Multi‑Market: Experience developing software for diverse global markets, including proficiency in design systems that support multi‑language (i18n) implementations.
