Job description
Electrical Controls Engineer

Location: Barnsley, South Yorkshire

Salary: Circa £60,000 (potentially higher for the right candidates)

Role type: Permanent | Office-based | Full project lifecycle

The Company

An established UK engineering business with over 150 years of heritage, delivering complex MEICA and automation solutions across infrastructure, heavy industry and nuclear environments.

Known for exceptionally low staff turnover, this organisation is built around long‑term careers, technical excellence, and a genuinely supportive engineering culture. Many of the team have spent decades with the business, creating a deep pool of knowledge and expertise that’s rare to find.

The Role

This is a senior Electrical Controls Engineer position with responsibility for the full project lifecycle — from early concept and design through to FAT / SAT and commissioning.

You’ll take ownership of a long‑term nuclear‑related project (initially 18 months–2 years), working closely with an experienced, close‑knit controls team. The role is not software‑only; strong electrical design, hardware, and systems experience is essential, with software responsibility increasing over time.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver automated control systems from concept through to commissioning
  • Siemens PLC / HMI / SCADA programming (Siemens used almost exclusively)
  • Electrical design of control panels, MCCs and distribution systems
  • Production of FDS, SDS, FAT / SAT documentation and test procedures
  • Attendance at FAT / SAT and occasional UK site commissioning
  • Technical input into tenders, estimates and design specifications
  • Ensure compliance with relevant standards and safety requirements
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical, project and documentation engineers
What We’re Looking For
  • Strong experience as a Controls / Electrical Controls Engineer
  • Strong Siemens PLC background (TIA Portal)
  • Experience across both hardware and software delivery
  • Electrical design experience ( AutoCAD )
  • Background in control panel and MCC design
  • Experience working within a turnkey project environment
  • Knowledge of safety‑related control systems ( IEC 62061 / ISO 13849 )
  • Nuclear project experience highly desirable
  • Background progressing from electrical design into controls engineering
Working Pattern & Benefits
  • 37.5‑hour working week
  • Flexible start times between 7:30am–9:30am
  • Flexible finish times from 4:00pm
  • Shorter Fridays
  • Office‑based role in Barnsley
  • Hybrid working considered on a case‑by‑case basis (not contractual)
  • 4.5% matched pension
Why Consider This Role?
  • Long‑term, technically engaging projects
  • Join a business with rare levels of staff retention
  • Learn from senior engineers with decades of experience
  • Clear future progression as senior team members approach retirement
  • Stable workload with a strong project pipeline into 2026
