Job description
Senior Clinical Fellow – Speciality Trainee

The closing date is 25 December 2025.

The Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust wishes to appoint a Clinical Fellow (at Speciality Trainee level) to support the services of the ENT department. The Trust hosts the centralised head and neck surgical oncology, skull base and advanced rhinology services for Cheshire and Merseyside.

The post is set to commence in February 2026 and is a 6‑month fixed‑term role. The appointee is expected to support the present team and contribute to the running of services within the ENT Department. Applicants must hold Membership of a Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS ENT) and be fully registered with the General Medical Council. The incumbent will be expected to contribute to the department's active teaching and training programme at both under‑ and postgraduate levels.

Main duties of the job
  • Routine elective activity comprising supervised operating theatres, clinics and ward rounds within a fully‑complaint timetable.
  • Out‑of‑hours commitments (overnight, weekends) as part of a rolling on‑call rota for Aintree University Hospital, Royal Liverpool Hospital and Alder Hey Children's Hospital.
  • Participation in daytime on‑call when elective activity is cancelled.
  • Contribute to the department’s teaching and training programme.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • MBBS, MBChB (or equivalent)
  • MRCS (ENT) (or equivalent)

Clinical Experience
  • Completion of Foundation‑Year training (or equivalent)
  • Minimum 6 months experience in ENT.
  • Evidence of continuing medical education (e.g. courses)
  • At least 12 months experience in ENT
Teaching & training Experience
  • Experience of teaching to medical students, clinical and nursing staff, and other disciplines
  • Running and managing courses/conferences
Clinical Governance experience
  • Understanding of NHS management structures and the principles of Clinical Governance.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
Management Experience
  • Willingness to participate in management activities
  • Understanding of financial arrangements in the NHS
  • Ability to plan strategically and exercise sound judgment when faced with conflicting pressures.
  • Experience working in a busy tertiary centre and within multi‑disciplinary teams (e.g., Thyroid, Head and Neck)
  • Attendance of leadership, management, advanced communication courses
Audit Experience
  • Thorough understanding of the principles of clinical audit.
  • Publication of audit results.
  • Evidence of audit submitted for publication/peer review.
Research Experience
  • Understanding principles of research.
  • Proven track record in research.
  • Publication of research.
  • Evidence of awarded higher degree e.g., PhD
IT Skills
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office packages, e.g., Word, Excel, Access & PowerPoint; and patient information systems.
