Job summary

A leading NHS hospital trust in Greater London is seeking a Senior Clinical Fellow in Adult Pulmonary Hypertension. This role offers the opportunity to undertake specialized training in adult pulmonary hypertension, including comprehensive patient care and involvement in clinical research. The applicant should have significant medical experience and will participate in a range of clinical duties while supervising junior staff. This position includes educational opportunities and no on-call commitment.

Qualifications

  • At least 24 months’ experience in medicine, with CT1 and CT2 competencies.
  • 3 years’ training in cardiology, respiratory or other relevant fields.

Job description
Senior Clinical Fellow in Adult Pulmonary Hypertension

The closing date is 28 December 2025

The post holder will have the opportunity to undertake dedicated adult pulmonary hypertension training, including a full understanding of investigations, treatment and follow‑up of all forms of PH. The role involves in‑patient care, day‑case review, and outpatient work – both virtual and face‑to‑face – and will facilitate experience in right heart catheterisation and cardiopulmonary exercise testing. The post will participate in regular multidisciplinary team meetings, teaching ward rounds, audit, service improvement and clinical governance. There will be no on‑call commitment.

The Royal Brompton PH Service places a strong priority on clinical research and has attracted funding from industry, charitable bodies and the Department of Health. It is a postgraduate teaching hospital closely associated with the National Heart and Lung Institute Division of Imperial College School of Medicine.

This role may close early if a sufficient number of applications have been received.

Main duties of the job
  • Assist in the clinical services of the unit under direct consultant supervision
  • Participate in in‑patient, day‑case and outpatient care of adults with PH
  • Participate in the pre‑ and post‑procedure care of adults with PH undergoing right heart catheterisation
  • Supervise junior medical staff and assist with their ongoing education
  • Contribute to the weekly joint multidisciplinary clinical meetings
  • Assist in the accurate collection of clinical data for service standards and the national PH audit
Research responsibilities

Research is a fundamental component of patient care. The postholder will have the opportunity to initiate and carry out research, building on previous themes.

Clinical Governance

Participation in clinical audit and compliance with clinical governance are required.

Education and training

Weekly teaching ward rounds, MDT meetings and general Cardiology registrar/fellow training sessions provide ample educational opportunities. Additional training in echocardiography, right heart catheterisation, cardiopulmonary exercise testing and other imaging modalities (including CMR) will be available.

  • Tuesday AM – ward rounds / PH clinic RHC list
  • Tuesday PM – RHC list ward work
  • Wednesday AM – teaching ward rounds (weekly) & CPET list
  • Thursday AM – ward rounds / PH day‑cases
  • Thursday PM – SHO teaching PH clinic
  • Friday AM – PH clinic (8 am)
  • Friday PM – PH MDT

The Royal Brompton Pulmonary Hypertension unit is one of seven nationally commissioned centres in the UK. It manages a full range of PH patients, with referrals from across the South East and South of England, and manages around 1,000 patients. The service has an active interventional programme and includes high‑risk pregnancy, electrophysiology and transplantation clinics.
