Job description
Overview

Part-time (15- hours/0.4 Whole-Time Equivalent) Band 7 Advanced Specialist BMS position in the Chemistry Laboratory at Hammersmith Hospital, North West London Pathology (NWLP).

The role is part of the two Whole Time Equivalent Band 7 Senior staff responsible for running the Chemistry Lab, including oversight of the Abbott Alinity Ci analysers, and reporting to the Site Lead. The post involves day-to-day management of a laboratory section, training and supervision of staff, ensuring adherence to procedures and protocols. The laboratory provides a specialised intra-operative parathyroid monitoring service in theatres and operates a 24/7 service, requiring participation in late and weekend rosters.

You will need a relevant professional qualification to degree level or equivalent, an MSc, FIBMS or equivalent in a relevant discipline and HCPC registration. Post-HCPC registration experience in Clinical Chemistry and excellent technical, interpersonal and IT skills are required.

Main duties
  • Manage daily operations of a laboratory section under the Laboratory Manager's guidance, ensuring efficient service delivery.
  • Collaborate with team members to provide a professional clinical laboratory service and support departmental objectives.
  • Develop professional expertise and specialist skills while training and supervising staff to uphold high standards.
  • Coordinate specialist clinical technical and scientific services, including research and audits, and foster a culture of quality compliance with accrediting and regulatory standards.

Induction and start dates

The NWLP induction runs on the first Monday of each month (excluding bank holidays) and includes laboratory training. All new staff must attend during their first week. Start dates for 2024/25 include:

  • Monday 6 October 2025
  • Monday 3 November 2025
  • Monday 1 December 2025
