Purpose

To lead the development and implementation of Ofgems AI Governance framework ensuring responsible ethical and compliant use of AI across the organisation. This role will provide strategic oversight, establish governance standards and embed risk management practices to support Ofgems regulatory objectives and innovation agenda.

Additionally you will engage with the Head of Data & AI Governance to foster an environment that promotes a culture of data innovation and process excellence through the enhancement of AI capability including people process efficiency and technology. Your responsibilities will include supporting the operationalization of the AI governance framework and actively collaborating with senior business leaders within multiple forums. By working closely with key stakeholders you will ensure that Ofgems AI activities are of the highest quality and meet the required data quality standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • AI Governance Framework:
    • Design and maintain Ofgems AI Governance framework aligning with regulatory requirements and industry best practice.
    • Define policies standards and controls for AI development and deployment.
  • Risk & Compliance Oversight:
    • Identify and manage risks associated with AI systems including bias, transparency and accountability.
    • Ensure compliance with data protection, ethical guidelines and relevant legislation.
  • Stakeholder Engagement:
    • Act as the primary point of contact for AI governance across Ofgem.
    • Collaborate with internal teams, regulators and external partners to promote responsible AI adoption.
  • Monitoring & Assurance:
    • Establish processes for ongoing monitoring of AI models and systems.
    • Implement audit and assurance mechanisms to validate compliance and performance.
  • Capability Building:
    • Develop guidance and training for internal teams on AI governance principles.
    • Support cultural change towards ethical and responsible AI use.
  • Innovation & Policy Influence:
    • Stay abreast of emerging AI governance trends and regulatory developments.
    • Contribute to policy discussions and represent Ofgem in external forums.
Key Outputs and Deliverables
  • Manage Ofgems AI Policies and Controls Framework: Own and maintain the organisations AI governance policies and controls, updating and developing new policies as regulatory or business requirements evolve.
  • Define and Monitor AI Risk Metrics: Support AI product owners and technical teams in establishing measurable AI risk and performance metrics (e.g. fairness, transparency, robustness) and implement processes for monitoring and reporting.
  • Build an AI Governance Community: Establish a central team of AI policy and controls professionals and foster an organisational culture that values responsible and ethical AI practices.
  • Operationalise AI Governance Processes: Develop and embed operational workflows for AI governance including onboarding new AI models, defining associated risk controls and setting review and reporting frequencies.
  • Align AI Governance Standards and Raise Awareness: Ensure alignment with key AI governance standards and frameworks, promote awareness of ethical AI principles and highlight the strategic importance of AI as an organisational capability.
  • Leverage Technology for AI Governance: Utilise enterprise platforms and tools to support AI governance activities, conduct baseline assessments of AI maturity and create improvement plans to strengthen compliance and accountability.
  • Stay Ahead of Regulatory Guidance: Monitor and interpret regulatory developments on AI and digitalisation ensuring Ofgem remains compliant and is recognised as an authority on AI policy and controls.
  • Support Programmes and Prioritise AI Governance Initiatives: Provide governance support to AI-related programmes, manage a prioritised backlog of AI policy and control initiatives and develop business cases and delivery plans for implementation.

  • Department of Energy Security and Net Zero Data and AI governance teams
