Location: New Barn School, Newbury
Job Title: Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant
Contract Type: Full-time / Part-time (Term Time Only)
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
Start Date: As soon as possible

Role Purpose

To support pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN), including social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs, enabling them to access learning, develop independence, and achieve their full potential in a safe, nurturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

Student Support

• Provide one-to-one and small-group support for pupils with SEN, including autism, ADHD, and SEMH needs.
• Support students in managing behaviour, emotional regulation, and social interaction.
• Assist pupils in accessing the curriculum by adapting resources and activities under the direction of the teacher.
• Promote independence, confidence, and positive learning behaviours.

Classroom Support

• Work collaboratively with teachers to deliver engaging and inclusive lessons.
• Support the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs), Behaviour Support Plans, and EHCP targets.
• Assist with classroom organisation, preparation of learning materials, and maintaining a positive learning environment.

Pastoral & Behavioural Support

• Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils, acting as a consistent and supportive role model.
• Support de-escalation strategies and behaviour management plans in line with school policies.
• Supervise pupils during transitions, breaktimes, and off-site activities when required.

Collaboration & Communication

• Work closely with teachers, SENCOs, therapists, and external professionals.
• Provide feedback on pupil progress, behaviour, and wellbeing.
• Communicate professionally with parents/carers when appropriate.

Safeguarding & Welfare

• Uphold safeguarding, health and safety, and child protection policies at all times.
• Support pupils with personal care needs where required, ensuring dignity and respect.

Person Specification

Essential:

• Experience working with children or young people with SEN or additional needs.
• A calm, patient, and resilient approach.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
• Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.

Desirable:

• Experience supporting pupils with SEMH needs.
• Training in behaviour management, de-escalation, or trauma-informed practice.
• Relevant qualifications (e.g. Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant, CACHE, or equivalent).
• Experience in a specialist or alternative provision setting.
