Job description
Higher Level Teaching Assistant – SEN Secondary School

Teaching Personnel are seeking a dedicated Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join a supportive SEN secondary school in the Warrington area. The school supports pupils aged 11–16 with a wide range of special educational needs including Autism (ASC), ADHD, Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs (SEMH), Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD), communication difficulties and sensory needs. This is a full‑time role so Monday – Friday availability is essential.

⭐ The Role

As a HLTA, you will play a key role in supporting teaching and learning across the school. Responsibilities include:

  • Leading small group interventions and supporting targeted learning programmes
  • Delivering pre‑planned lessons in the teacher’s absence
  • Supporting pupils with SEN on a 1:1 and group basis
  • Assisting with behaviour regulation and emotional support
  • Adapting resources and activities to meet diverse learning needs
  • Working closely with the SENCO, teachers, therapists and external professionals
  • Supporting pupils with communication, social skills and independence
  • Contributing to EHCP targets and progress reviews
  • Helping to create a safe, inclusive and nurturing learning environment
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
  • HLTA qualification
  • Experience working in an SEN school or supporting pupils with SEN
  • Confidence delivering learning activities and supporting pupils aged 11–16
  • Strong understanding of Autism, ADHD, SEMH and other additional needs
  • Positive behaviour management and de‑escalation skills
  • Ability to build strong, supportive relationships with young people
  • A calm, resilient and flexible approach
Requirements:
  • Right to work in the UK
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)
  • Relevant references covering the last 2 years
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting pupil wellbeing
