About the Role
Equitas are seeking a reliable and proactive School Caretaker to join a secondary school in Reading. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the school site is safe, secure, and well maintained, providing a welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors.
This is a hands-on role requiring flexibility, initiative, and a strong sense of responsibility.
Responsibilities
- Carry out day-to-day maintenance, basic repairs, and minor DIY tasks across the school site.
- Ensure the premises, grounds, and facilities are clean, safe, and secure at all times.
- Open and close the school buildings (including alarms, gates, and locking systems).
- Monitor and maintain heating, lighting, and water systems to ensure they operate effectively.
- Support with setting up rooms, furniture, and equipment for school events, meetings, or exams.
- Ensure health & safety standards are met in line with school and statutory requirements.
- Act as the first point of contact for contractors and oversee their work on site when required.
- Maintain records relating to maintenance, security, health & safety checks, and compliance.
- Undertake regular inspections of the premises and grounds to identify and resolve issues.
- Respond promptly to emergencies, including fire alarms, security incidents, or urgent repairs.
Person Specification
Essential:
- Previous experience in a caretaker, School caretaker, site manager, or facilities role (ideally within a school or similar environment).
- Practical skills in basic repairs, DIY, plumbing, and general maintenance.
- Good understanding of health & safety regulations.
- Ability to work independently and use initiative.
- Strong organisational skills and reliability.
Desirable:
- Experience working in a school or educational setting desirable but not essential
