Rolling Stock Fleet Engineer

Based in Northampton
Salary: £54,000 + 5-10% bonus + matched pension (up to 10%)
Permanent | Hours: 40 hrs/week (Mon-Fri, days)

The Opportunity

As a Rolling Stock Fleet Engineer, you'll be the first line of support for a modern Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) fleet, leading investigations into complex technical and reliability issues.
You'll collaborate closely with technicians, suppliers, and engineering teams to keep the fleet operating safely, efficiently and cost-effectively.

You will analyse fault data, write detailed engineering reports, manage engineering changes, and provide insights that drive smarter maintenance and higher reliability.
This role exists due to an internal promotion, clear evidence of progression within the team.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Investigate and resolve technical, product safety and reliability issues for the Rolling Stock platform.
  • Develop and document cost-effective solutions to improve reliability and availability.
  • Analyse fault downloads and failures to identify root causes and coordinate with suppliers to share findings.
  • Support and mentor technicians in diagnosing complex Rolling Stock faults.
  • Manage engineering modifications and improvements through the change control process.
  • Contribute technical expertise to cross-functional rail engineering projects.
What You will Bring
  • NVQ LEVEL 3 in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent Rolling Stock experience. [MD1]
  • Knowledge of railway maintenance procedures and EMU systems.
  • Proven experience in fault finding, diagnostics, and technical report writing.
  • Ability to analyse event data and interpret mechanical/electrical drawings.
  • Confidence working independently while communicating clearly with teams and suppliers.
  • Ability to produce technical report writing, and engineering change documentation.
