Job description
Overview

We are seeking a dynamic and motivated Registered Biomedical Scientist to work in our friendly, well-equipped Cellular Pathology department, which processes approximately 35,000 samples per year, providing essential services to the Trust and the wider healthcare community. You will have excellent communication, scientific and time management skills, and your work will ensure that the department continues to deliver a high quality, timely and effective service where patient safety and experience are central. The Cellular Pathology Department is in an exciting period of service development and has begun implementing a Digital Pathology solution, in which the post holders will have the opportunity to be involved.

The central Histology laboratory service is situated on the Royal Hampshire Hospital site in Winchester with a small satellite team based at the Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospital. The post holders will work routinely as part of the team based at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital with a commitment to the Basingstoke site as part of a BMS rotational team to lead the team and perform frozen section and OSNA techniques, once training where required is in place.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in all core aspects of routine Cellular Pathology including microtomy, embedding, special staining techniques, Immunohistochemistry and specimen transfers.
  • Lead and support the team as part of a BMS rotational arrangement; perform frozen section and OSNA techniques where trained to do so.
  • Engage with quality management, health & safety and quality improvement activities.
  • Contribute to ongoing service development and the implementation of the Digital Pathology solution.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Registered Biomedical Scientist (RBS) with relevant professional registration.
  • Experience in Cellular Pathology or related laboratory settings; advantageous knowledge of quality management, health & safety and quality improvement.
  • Excellent communication, scientific and time management skills; ability to work as part of a team with a positive, proactive attitude.
  • Support for IBMS Specialist Portfolios and extending practical skill sets for more specialist roles after competencies are met.
