Your new role

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Permanent Reactive Caretaker/Janitor to cover our Barnsley Schools account. You will be primarily based at one school location yet expected to be mobile across our 11 schools on the account as required.
The role requires a UK driving licence and your own vehicle – you will be able to claim mileage and insurance through the business.

Role Details

Salary: £13.72 per hour
Hours: 37.5 per week (Mon‑Fri, 5:30am – 6:00pm, 52 weeks).

Responsibilities
  • Deliver defined and non‑specific tasks in a professional and safe manner following Amey’s Zero Code Policies and Procedures.
  • Work according to best practice guidelines, ensuring correct use of colour‑coded equipment.
  • Comply with Internal and External HSEQ requirements, RAMs and COSHH.
  • Provide a maintenance service that meets client contractual requirements.
  • Use Amey‑approved chemicals, machinery, consumables and equipment only.
  • Operate machinery safely and in line with guidelines and training.
  • Deliver good customer engagement ensuring client satisfaction.
  • Report any concerns or issues to your People Manager immediately.
  • Ensure that all duties are completed within the time provided to Amey-defined standards.
  • Attend and engage in briefings, training sessions and any additional hours if required.
  • Carry out any other reasonable requests as directed by your People Manager.
  • Wear appropriate PPE and uniform provided by Amey only.
  • Conduct yourself professionally at all times.
  • Comply with Amey’s Key Holding policies, using keys only for your shifts.
  • Follow emergency procedures, escalation and out-of-hours processes.
  • Escalate issues with intruder/fire alarm systems and panels.
  • Reactive caretaking to cover/open schools across the account, including absence, sickness, planned holidays and other requested cover.
  • Ensure smooth running of school premises, escalating issues to Helpdesk/Premises Manager.
  • Carry out day-to-day DIY/maintenance and minor repairs (furniture fixtures, wall repairs, heating, lighting and alarm systems).
  • Check premises to guard against vandalism and ensure doors/windows are locked when not in use.
  • Arrange and report any required maintenance outside the day-to-day repairs.
  • Manage on-site employees to keep premises open and ready, escalating issues to Premises Manager.
  • Arrange chairs, tables, exam set‑ups and any other requested set‑ups and clear away afterwards.
  • Complete mandatory/statutory PPMs.
  • Communicate professionally with the school as Amey’s first point of call.
  • Complete relevant Amey documentation to a good standard (Contractor Inductions, Site access forms, RAMs review).
  • Use Microsoft Teams/Concept tablets and phones competently.
  • Regularly monitor and respond to emails professionally.
  • Use a personal vehicle and claim mileage back through SAP Concur.
