Job description

We are seeking a highly qualified Quantum Hardware Engineer, On-Premises Installation for our Brooklyn Park, MN or Broomfield, CO location to install and service Helios systems for our Hardware-as-a-Service business. Helios is our next-generation quantum computer with 96 physical qubits and error rates <0.1% that will be offered both for cloud access in 2025 as well as on customer premises at a later date. This would be our second Hardware-as-a-Service offering following our installation of a quantum computer at RIKEN’s Wako, Japan campus. This advanced opportunity begins at an early stage of a Helios project, allowing the ideal candidate to participate in integration, validation, and preparation for shipment at the Quantinuum site while developing deep familiarity with the Helios hardware and software. The successful candidate will then be part of the team installing and validating performance of the system at a customer site.

As we continue to build out the team, we will require a diverse set of skills and have identified three specific roles:

  • One that requires deep physics knowledge of trapped‑ion‑based technology and would be responsible for qubit‑based integration and validation tasks. This role would be best suited for the candidate with an atomic physics or mature quantum computing background.
  • One that requires demonstrated skill and broad knowledge over laser and optical systems designed for light delivery, collection, and detection. This role would be responsible for integration and validation tasks associated with laser and optical subsystems.
  • One that requires extensive experience with hardware‑software interfacing, lab‑scale networking, and comprehensive software troubleshooting and validation. This role would be responsible for installing, configuring, and troubleshooting software deployments spanning local control systems, lab servers, and cloud‑based services.

We encourage exceptional candidates to apply to this position even if they do not fit into one of the above roles, especially if they have experience in quantum computing, lasers and optics, software control of hardware subsystems, equipment installation and service, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and/or systems engineering.

All applicants for placement in safety‑sensitive positions will be required to submit to a pre‑employment drug test.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Successful installation of Helios systems on customer premises including preparation for shipment, relocation, installation, and validation
  • Improve and mature plans and work instructions for the above activities
  • Explicit ownership of specific subsystems and system functionality based on prior experience and Quantinuum training
  • On‑site service and maintenance of Helios systems with the support of subject‑matter experts and a global team
  • Participate in integration and validation efforts at Quantinuum site prior to installation
  • Have utmost focus on business success, technical progress, and professional interactions for both you and the team
  • Travel (domestically and internationally) up to 3 months at a time during deployments and 25% otherwise
YOU MUST HAVE:
  • Bachelor’s Degree completed
  • Minimum 5+ years experience as a technical contributor in a hardware operations, production, R&D, or service environment
  • Eligibility to complete international travel
  • Due to Contractual requirements, must be a U.S. Person defined as U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or green card holder, workers granted asylum or refugee status
  • Due to national security requirements imposed by the U.S. Government, candidates for this position must not be a People’s Republic of China national or Russian national unless the candidate is also a U.S. citizen.
WE VALUE:
  • A history of successful problem solving and process improvement in an operations, production, R&D, or service environment
  • Demonstrated installation of a complicated, multi‑component system as part of a team using a well‑defined and repeatable process
  • Experience generating and implementing technical and standard work documentation, test planning, handoff management, and product lifecycle management
  • Experience with optical, electrical, mechanical, computing, networking, and interconnect systems individually or as part of an integrated assembly
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

$130,000 - $195,000 a year

Compensation & Benefits: Non‑Incentive Eligible. The pay range for this role is $130,000 – $195,000 annually. Actual compensation within this range may vary based on the candidate’s skills, educational background, professional experience, and unique qualifications for the role.
