Overview

This is a great opportunity to join Public Health at Tameside MBC. Tameside is one of the ten boroughs in Greater Manchester and is a 10‑minute train ride into Manchester City Centre. We work closely with the other nine local authorities and Public Health teams across Greater Manchester, including the GM Combined Authority, led by the GM Mayor Andy Burnham. There are exciting GM-wide programmes which this role will have the direct opportunity to lead on, such as the Live Well programme.

Role and Leadership

This role will provide strategic leadership within Public Health, across the council and wider system, alongside the Director of Public Health, Assistant Director and the existing Public Health Consultant in the team. It will provide strategic leadership as part of the Public Health Senior Team and the Extended Leadership team of the council. You will work with partners to improve health outcomes across the population, as identified in the Tameside Corporate Plan and Health & Wellbeing Strategy. The role reports directly to the Director of Public Health.

What This Role Delivers

It is an exciting time to join Tameside council with positive improvements to realise our vision that Tameside can be a place where everyone can achieve their hopes and ambitions. This role will be a key part of that work, including delivering on Tameside's Live Well programme and being closer to residents across each of our nine towns to ensure we are delivering the right support in the right place, at the right time.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide advice, guidance and strategic leadership in the Public Health team and across the organization and wider network of partners, including senior leadership around health improvement, tobacco harms, unhealthy weight and inactivity.
  • Work across the Voluntary, Community, Faith and Social Enterprise (VCFSE) sector and provide public health advice into the healthcare system (healthcare public health).
  • Support the work across neighbourhoods agenda (including delivering the Live Well programme).
  • Contribute to developing the public health function and day-to-day operational activities of the Public Health team.
  • Collaborate with a wide range of local partner organisations and maintain an excellent reputation for collaboration and delivery in Tameside.
Qualifications and Skills
  • A suitably qualified public health professional with excellent problem-solving, communication, political and technical skills.
  • Energy and drive to contribute to improving health and reducing inequalities in Tameside.
  • Interest in wider determinants of health, health improvement, and working with the VCFSE sector is desirable.
  • Strong relationship and partnership skills for cross-council and multiagency work.
  • High level of intellectual rigour, political awareness, negotiation, motivation, and flexibility; ability to communicate effectively in diverse settings.
  • Tact, diplomacy and leadership; ability to advise, challenge and advocate across organisational boundaries and influence without direct authority.

You will play a key role in developing the public health function and supporting day-to-day operations. The role offers access to CPD opportunities to support ongoing professional registration, and opportunities to explore areas such as research and health protection, with broad line management and educational supervision experience.
