Prototype Build Technician

Location: CV30 Area

Hourly Rate: £17 per hour + holiday pay

Hours: Monday to Friday (normal hours)

Contract Length: 6-month contract

Start Date: ASAP

Syntech Recruitment are partnering with a leading engineering organisation to appoint a Prototype Build Technician. This is a hands‑on, detail‑driven role working on the strip, build, inspection and development of prototype and pre‑production transmission systems.

Responsibilities
  • Strip, build, assemble and inspect prototype transmissions in line with build manuals and engineering instruction.
  • Investigate and fault‑find build issues, manufacturing defects and mechanical failures.
  • Strip and assess unfamiliar or one‑off transmission assemblies without existing build documentation.
  • Apply a deep understanding of transmission architecture, component function and driveline systems.
  • Install instrumentation, sensors and bespoke modifications on test units as directed by engineering.
  • Identify, raise and report build concerns; support engineering with structured problem‑solving (including 8D).
  • Follow all part‑picking, kitting, storage and inventory processes.
  • Maintain a safe, well‑organised, prototype‑standard workshop environment.
Experience
  • Hands‑on prototype build experience and/or direct experience with transmission systems.
  • Proven background assembling, stripping or validating complex mechanical assemblies.
  • Strong capability to read, interpret and work accurately to engineering drawings and tolerances.
  • Ability to verify quality using precise measurement techniques (manual metrology or CMM advantageous).
  • Experience modifying or fabricating prototype hardware (e.g., machining, drilling, grinding, welding).
