Job summary

A leading global life science tools company in Guildford is seeking a Project Manager to oversee the production and replacement of reference materials. The role involves managing project workflows, liaising with teams, and ensuring quality standards. Ideal candidates should have a degree in chemistry or biological sciences and exhibit strong project management skills. Full training will be provided for those looking to develop their project management expertise. This is a full-time, office-based position.

Qualifications

  • Experience in independent planning, delivery or management of technical project work.
  • Excellent planning, organisational and time management skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with researchers and senior managers.
  • Excellent IT skills, particularly Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Self-motivated, methodical and flexible individual.
  • Understanding of laboratory quality systems (e.g. ISO/IEC 17025 and GLP) is an advantage.

Responsibilities

  • Manage project workflow for stakeholders including timelines and project plan definition.
  • Arrange production of reference materials to an agreed specification.
  • Lead project meetings and present results at planning and certification panels.
  • Liaise with subcontractors to ensure required analyses are delivered.

Job description
Overview

At the UK National Measurement Laboratory (NML) for chemical and bio-measurements we deliver world leading measurement science to solve complex global challenges. This job is to project manage the replacement and production of new reference materials.

The Office of Reference Materials (ORM) works in accordance with internationally agreed best practice and has ISO 17034 accreditation as a reference material producer for a wide range of materials. It currently has a portfolio of over 120 reference materials and certified reference materials. These materials support measurements over a range of sectors including food and beverages, environment, industrial and clinical.

The job holder will work closely with other members of the ORM Team, LGC Statisticians and analytical teams within the NML. Please note that this role is primarily office based.

Key Responsibilities
  • Building project workflow for stakeholders including timelines, project plan definition of tasks and team responsibilities, costs and status reporting
  • Arranging production of reference materials to an agreed specification under direction but with minimal supervision
  • Leading project meetings and presentation of results at planning and certification panels as required
  • Liaising with subcontractors including laboratories internal and external to ensure the required analyses are delivered to specification
  • Collating and evaluating data in partnership with the LGC statisticians
  • Maintaining accurate records
  • Drafting reference material certificates and reports
  • Assisting with ad hoc reference material related activities providing support for the team such as stock counts, bottling and labeling of NML reference materials
  • Adhering to quality systems and UKAS accreditation requirements
Qualifications
  • Experience in independent planning, delivery or management of technical project work
  • Excellent planning, organisational and time management skills
  • Ability to work well as part of a multi‑functional team with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with researchers and senior managers
  • A professional manner with excellent written and oral communication skills and high level of attention to detail
  • Excellent IT skills (particularly Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Self‑motivated, methodical and flexible individual with an aptitude for multi‑activity working and able to prioritise tasks and work under pressure
  • Ability to complete work to agreed timescales
  • A good understanding of the principles and operation of laboratory quality systems (e.g. ISO/IEC 17025 and GLP) would be an advantage
  • Previous experience of working in a laboratory environment would be an advantage
  • Experience in the use of reference materials or knowledge of reference material production would be an advantage
Candidate Specification

Ideally the successful candidate will have a degree or equivalent qualification in chemistry or biological sciences.

This would be a great opportunity for an organised individual with a good understanding of analytical measurement science to move away from a laboratory‑based role and develop their project management skills (full training will be provided).
