Job description
Overview

We are recruiting for a Professor of Community-based Control of Infectious Diseases to join the Pandemic Sciences Institute (PSI), part of the Nuffield Department of Medicine. This is a new role created as part of a strategic PSI investment to accelerate the development and evaluation of next-generation approaches to infectious disease control.

Responsibilities
  • Lead a research programme focused on the design and field evaluation of community-based infectious disease control interventions.
  • Strengthen PSI’s capability to deliver end-to-end development and assessment of novel, evidence-based tools for managing emerging, epidemic- and pandemic-prone infectious diseases.
  • Complement existing PSI expertise across clinical infectious diseases, epidemiology, molecular biology, computational biology, and mathematical modelling.
  • Translate emerging innovations (such as mobile apps, wearable sensors, molecular diagnostics, and point-of-care tools) into practical public health solutions.
  • Support the establishment of a dedicated research team for the programme.
Qualifications
  • PhD/DPhil with significant senior-level experience; recognised international authority in infectious disease control with an impactful publication portfolio.
  • Substantial expertise in applied infectious disease epidemiology, causal inference, public health, or community-based intervention studies.
  • Strong leadership and mentorship track record, with ability to lead a research programme and manage a team of scientists.
  • This post can be offered as either clinical or non-clinical. If appointed clinically, the candidate must be medically qualified, hold MRCP(UK) or an equivalent qualification, have a Certificate of Specialist Training (CCT) in a relevant clinical specialty, be registered with the GMC with a licence to practise, and be on the Specialist Register. Participation in clinical activities as an NHS honorary consultant is expected.
Contract, terms and how to apply

The position is offered full time on a fixed-term contract for 5 years. The post has an attractive support package, including support for the recruitment of research staff to develop the group’s capability and expertise.
