Offer Description

The Department of Biosciences at Durham University seeks to appoint an outstanding candidate to the role of Associate Professor or Professor in the broad field of ecological modelling. This post is funded by Durham University's strategic Heritage360 initiative, which aims to bring together research on natural and cultural history and heritage.

Heritage360 is a new research platform funded through Durham University's Strategic Research Fund. It focuses on holistic approaches to heritage, integrating natural and cultural heritage research. The initiative involves six academic departments: Archaeology, Biosciences, Chemistry, Geography, History, Modern Languages and Cultures. Applicants with expertise in applying ecological modelling across historical and future timescales are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be based in the Biosciences department, likely within a new Computational Ecology workspace, and will primarily focus on research, with teaching duties by agreement.

The Department of Biosciences is ranked in the top 4 UK Biology Departments (3rd in The Complete University Guide, 4th in the Guardian University Guide) and has a 100% internationally recognized research environment (REF2021). The department holds an Athena SWAN Silver award and values excellence in all its forms. Applications from under-represented groups are particularly welcomed.

The successful postholder will demonstrate leadership across disciplines, departments, and faculties, enhancing existing strengths in heritage and ecological research, and contributing innovative approaches. External grant acquisition is a key component, and candidates should have a strong track record and well-developed plans for future applications. Candidates must be committed to working within the transdisciplinary environment of the Heritage360 programme and meet the requirements for an Associate or Full Professor in Biosciences.

This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to internationally excellent research and teaching, with excellent career development prospects. For more information, visit our Department pages at Durham Biosciences and the Heritage360 webpages.
