Overview

The EMEA Energy & Water Resources team focuses on delivering secure, sustainable, clean and affordable energy and water infrastructure to support AWS customers as they migrate and expand their interaction with the Cloud. AWS Infrastructure Services (AIS) designs, plans, delivers, and operates AWS global infrastructure, including data centers, servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment to ensure continual access to AWS services. We work on challenging problems with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain and seek talented people to help.

You will join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You will collaborate with teams across AWS to uphold safety and security while delivering scalable capacity at the lowest possible cost for customers. This role will be based in London, UK. Expected travel is 40%, domestic and international.

In this role, you will develop energy strategies to scale grid-connected data centers, identify and analyse energy generation and storage technologies and innovations, support the design, execution and implementation of sustainable power solutions, and understand barriers to growth and risks in the energy sector as we develop products and projects to support customers.

The candidate will maintain a detailed understanding of energy markets across the EMEA region and an in-depth appreciation of factors affecting those markets from technological, grid, policy and regulatory perspectives. They will appraise technology readiness and identify how those technologies can resolve barriers to growth in support of our customers as we transition to a cleaner electricity grid. Developing commercial propositions and projects incorporating new technologies will be a key output. The optimal candidate will be a pragmatic visionary with a results-oriented approach, experienced in developing and delivering pioneering projects, have strong analytical skills, financial acumen, and a track record of working with utilities, regulators and developers across the energy industry.

Key responsibilities
  • Identify and develop innovative renewable generation projects and new technologies that support scaling our operations across EMEA.
  • Identify systemic risks in power markets and mitigate in collaboration with partner teams.
  • Identify opportunities for AWS to stimulate the transition to a cleaner grid in delivering growth across the EMEA region.
  • Work with Amazon partner teams to support the development of strategic energy sourcing opportunities.
  • Identify and deliver energy innovation projects that reduce cost, are scalable, and support the power grids in which we operate.
  • Identify and develop cost savings projects and initiatives related to energy infrastructure.
  • Manage energy projects against plans and objectives to ensure commitments are met, delivering cost savings and sustainability goals.
  • Work with regulators to develop policies and guidelines enabling AWS strategies and objectives.
  • Support consultation responses on energy policy with AWS Public Policy across the EMEA region.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • 15+ years of experience across utility / energy / consultancy power systems with a track record delivering projects in power systems, grid infrastructure, renewable generation, and power trading or energy procurement.
  • Proven understanding of power market design and energy markets, with ability to structure and formulate investment theses for new technologies.
  • 7+ years of experience using analytical skills to analyze electrical grid infrastructure, energy policies, regulations, and utility tariffs.
  • 5+ years of international business experience maintaining strong stakeholder relationships.
  • 7+ years of experience managing multiple simultaneous projects requiring communication, organization, time management, and problem-solving skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Degree in a relevant discipline, with Masters (MBA/MSc) or relevant postgraduate qualification.
  • Experience delivering projects at utility scale of renewable generation or storage, energy innovation, or infrastructure development.
  • Experience working with policymakers, public utility commissions and other energy regulators.
  • Experience of IT infrastructure, data centers and cloud services.
  • Business language is English; ability to converse in German, Spanish, Swedish or French is advantageous.
