Title: Principal Risk Analyst / Risk Modeller
Location: Palestra/Hybrid
Pay Band: Band 3
Salary: Circa £60K + TfL benefits
Contract Type: Full-time, Permanent
Hybrid working within this role enables a balance of 50 per cent of time split between the office and home over a 4-week period. Hybrid working arrangements can evolve subject to business requirements
Job Purpose
This role exists to provide data analysis and modelling to support the assessment and quantification of risk across TfL, to inform pan-TfL risk reduction strategies as well as decision making at a local level. It sits within the Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) directorate, in the Analysis & Direction team, whose aim is to enable TfL and its partners to make London safer, healthier and greener with evidence-led insights, resources and strategic plans.
Key Accountabilities
- Develop and maintain SHE risk models to influence SHE and wider business activity to reduce SHE-related risks and subsequent business impact
- Proactively produce risk models of key SHE trends and the impact that key actions could have on the business and associated SHE trends
- Proactive use of advanced analytical methods to interrogate the data and identify links to translate into business impact to inform business decision making. Interface with strategic colleagues to ensure effective collaboration for data-driven strategy development and improvement activity.
- Utilise risk models to uncover SHE issues before they materialise and support proactive decision making.
- Work with other analytical functions across TfL and the business to develop analytical capability. Understand best practice developments in the field to drive improvement in the service provided.
- Build data analytical and risk modelling capability within the team. Assist in developing training for SHE Business Partners and business areas to improve knowledge of SHE data and risk models.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience
Skills
- Highly skilled in data manipulation, management, analysis and modelling (essential)
- Highly numerate and analytical (essential), particularly in statistics (desirable)
- Ability to work with data in repeatable, transparent processes, eg through coding languages such as R, Python and SQL (essential)
- Developing and maintaining quantified risk assessments / safety risk models particularly within the transport industry (desirable), or a strong desire to learn (essential)
- Able to work with and draw meaningful insights out of complex datasets and information (essential)
- Building data models, reports and dashboards using a commercial data analytics & visualisation tool (desirable)
- Strong ability to communicate with non-expert stakeholders, including subject matter experts such as asset engineers, to seek their input, as well as non-technical senior managers, to understand and challenge their requirements (essential)
- Ability to explain techniques, data, processes etc to more junior colleagues
- Collaboration with colleagues within Analysis & Direction, the wider SHE directorate, and across TfL to continuously improve the way we quantify and analyse risk, and embed risk models and risk analysis into business process to drive SHE decision-making.
Knowledge
- Strong understanding of risk, and particularly how safety risks are assessed and managed (desirable)
- Knowledge of risk modelling techniques such as fault & event trees, bow-tie diagrams, etc (desirable), or a strong desire to learn (essential)
- Good understanding of the Mayor's Transport Strategy and TfL's business priorities, particularly in regard to safety, health and environmental objectives
- Good understanding of TfL's operations and assets, and how they affect safety, health and environmental outcomes
Experience
- Experience building and maintaining risk models (desirable)
- Experience producing business insight to drive strategy and decision making
- Experience setting data standards and establishing a data-driven culture
- Experience providing board-level reports and management summaries
- Experience in communicating complex information in an easily digestible manner
