Overview

Murphy is recruiting for the Principal Mechanical Design Engineer (Water) to work within the Applied Engineering team in Kentish Town, London.

Our engineering teams represent a multi–disciplined range of engineering skills, adding value across all our sectors, and pushing the boundaries of digital construction, engineering innovation and design to deliver intelligent, sustainable and economical engineering solutions.

This role focuses on the design, maintenance, and optimisation of pumping stations, water storage facilities, and transmission systems, playing a key role in ensuring the reliability, efficiency, and sustainability of mechanical assets across the water network.

Responsibilities
  • Review Scopes of Works provided by Clients (both internal and external) at Tender stage, managing and developing the returned
  • Tender submission within the specified time constraints. This includes developing cost resource estimates, execution plans and project programmes.
  • Developing mechanical and piping designs for pumping stations, reservoirs, and transmission pipelines.
  • Preparing technical specifications, drawings, and documentation in line with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Preparing detailed technical reports and documentation
  • Conducting feasibility and conceptual studies, outline and detail designs and risk assessments.
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, especially Electrical, Instrumentation, Control and Automation to develop innovative solutions.
  • Ensuring all designs and installations comply with UK Water Industry Mechanical Standards, WRc guidelines, and Health & Safety regulations.
  • Providing technical support during project execution, commissioning, and operations.
  • Providing constructive feedback on deliverables and performance of junior members of staff, assisting with the coaching and progression of their professional development.
  • Undertake site visits and investigations when appropriate.
  • Participate in and manage the successful delivery of all Formal Process Safety Assessments, including, but not limited to: HAZOP and ALM.
Qualifications
  • Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering
  • Chartered Engineer with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (or similar) or working towards chartership.
  • Proven experience in mechanical engineering within the water or utilities sector.
  • Strong understanding of pumping systems, hydraulic principles, and mechanical asset lifecycle.
  • Excellent problem–solving and analytical skills.
  • Good technical report writing skills suitable for submission to stakeholders.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across engineering, operations, and commercial teams.
