Job description
Overview

Preceptorship programme for newly qualified nurses and nurse associates. It supports them as they develop confidence as autonomous professionals, refining skills, values and behaviours while working with experienced professionals within the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability (RHN).

The programme complies with the Capital Nurse Pan London Preceptorship Framework (2017) and Health Education England (HEE) preceptorship standards. RHN is a care provider for vulnerable patients at extreme risk; safeguarding patients is our highest priority.

Paths
  • Accelerated Preceptorship: for nurses/nursing associates recruited during the COVID-19 pandemic or internationally recruited nurses. Duration: six weeks.
  • Preceptorship for Newly Qualified Nurses/Nursing Associates: for all newly qualified nurses and nursing associates within the first year of employment. Duration: six to nine months.
  • Beyond Preceptorship: for all nurses in 24–36 months of employment who have progressed through the main preceptorship programmes. Focus is on career development and progression.
Delivery

Preceptorship is delivered through classroom-based face-to-face sessions, combined with practical experience and assessment in clinical areas and some eLearning modules. The preceptee will have paid protected and supernumerary time to complete the programme successfully.

Content areas

Two broad areas support safe, effective and fulfilling practice:

  • Clinical Skills and Competency Development and Compliance – building hands-on skills to deliver safe and effective care as per job roles. The essential domains are grouped into six areas:
  • Clinical Practice – values and ethics, the NMC code, reflective practice, revalidation portfolio development, RHN values, coping and resilience, professional registration and indemnity.
  • Communication and Teamwork – conflict management, difficult conversations, communication techniques, data protection, effective team management.
  • Leadership, Personal and People Development – leadership and role modelling, emotional intelligence and resilience, clinical teaching styles, supervision and delegation, performance appraisals, personal development plans, revalidation portfolio development.
  • Facilitation of Learning – teaching and learning strategies, practice supervision and assessment, coaching skills, SWOT and PDSA analysis, feedback skills.
  • Service Improvement, Safety and Quality, and Research and Evidence – Datix risk assessments and clinical incidents, safe staffing, skill mixing and allocation, clinical audits, quality measures such as KPIs and FFTs.
  • Professionalism and Integrity, Equality and Diversity – understanding the NMC code of conduct, delegation in practice, equality and diversity, uniform policy.

Other programme features – dedicated clinical education team to support throughout the programme, sessions delivered by subject area specialists, assigned experienced preceptor, and paid supernumerary time for the programme.
