The role is challenging, varied, complex and responsive to the increasingly innovative development of new medicines and their role in healthcare today. The training opportunity is an advanced apprenticeship full time fixed term contract for 2 years. You will study to achieve Level 3 Pharmacy Technician (Integrated) apprenticeship standard. This qualification is approved to enable you to apply for registration to practice as Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council. Training and support will be provided by work based mentors and course tutors during your training. Please check the person specification for the minimum educational requirements to be accepted onto the apprenticeship.

Eligibility Criteria
  • Cannot already be on an Apprenticeship or any Government funded training.
  • Cannot have a qualification at the same or higher level in the same vocational area (there needs to be significant new learning).
  • Has been a UK resident for 3 or more years or meets the eligible and valid residency status and permission to work in the UK criteria in Annex A of the linked funding document: Apprenticeship funding rules 2024 to 2025.

Whilst in training the post holder will carry out pharmaceutical duties, under the direct supervision of an appropriate person in all sections of the pharmacy department. Some of the duties will be in the form of training exercises and competence-based assessments in conjunction with the Level 3 Pharmacy Technician (Integrated) apprenticeship standard, including one study day per week. The Pharmacy department is split over 2 sites, The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford. An inpatient and outpatient dispensing service is offered at both sites along with patient medication review and stock management at ward level. The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital site has an aseptic suite to compound and supply intravenous chemotherapy, nutrition and radioactive tracers for both sites.

Pharmacy Technicians are essential professional members of the healthcare team and contribute greatly in the supply of medicines and services for our patients. Career opportunities for Pharmacy Technicians, post registration, include medicines management roles; manufacturing; quality control; staff training; information technology; procurement; clinical trials; medicines utilisation reviews and contributing to the management of a comprehensive pharmacy service.
