Job Overview
We require an enthusiastic, well‑motivated individual experienced in performing Phlebotomy to serve as a Point of Care Testing Officer within the Black Country Pathology Service. The successful candidate will be based at New Cross Hospital but will travel to the four partner Trust sites and any outlying sites.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect blood samples from patients by venepuncture and analyse them in a clinic setting, providing results for review during the clinic.
- Monitor all POCT instrumentation: troubleshooting, quality control, audit, and maintaining training records.
- Provide technical support for haematology clinics.
- Provide phlebotomy support for haematology clinics and other areas as necessary.
- Plan own daily activities based on POCT equipment status and clinical needs.
- Answer telephone enquiries regarding POCT equipment and communicate with clinical users and suppliers.
- Use, troubleshoot and assess POCT equipment; return faulty equipment to the manufacturer following protocols.
- Participate in stock control and correct storage of POCT consumables; alert management when supplies need replenishment.
- Assist in the distribution of External Quality Assurance (EQA) samples, collate EQA data, and enter results into web‑based EQA schemes.
- Analyse internal quality control (IQC) and EQA samples on POCT equipment; perform audits and general office duties related to POCT.
- Handle POCT equipment, reagents and samples accurately, ensuring correct sample volumes, timing and accurate results.
- Load up and shut down analysers/meters and process patient samples.
- Check and maintain phlebotomy stock levels; perform elementary clot removal and routine maintenance/decontamination.
- Obtain blood specimens by venepuncture from all patients requiring blood analysis; follow standard operating procedures for patient identification, consent and correct sample handling.
- Prioritise duties and workload, working to deadlines and ensuring accurate labelling and transportation of specimens.
- Communicate with colleagues, clinical staff and external parties regarding patient data and adverse incidents.
- Utilise and ensure the use of laboratory information management systems and POCT IT platforms for accurate and timely patient data entry and retrieval.
- Travel to all BCPS Trusts and outlying hospitals.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Full driving licence.
- Good understanding of laboratory processes and extensive phlebotomy experience.
- Excellent organisational skills and ability to plan and prioritise tasks independently.
- Strong hand‑eye coordination, accuracy and ability to manage frequent periods of computer work, standing, walking and lifting.
- Knowledge of analyser principles, basic troubleshooting, and experience with EQA/IQC materials.
- Good communication skills and ability to liaise with various internal and external staff.
- Ability to commit to flexible working arrangements if required.

The Black Country Pathology Service is part of the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, which supports a diverse workforce and values compassionate care for patients.
